Summary

  • Pain and suffering are key to enduring Sith power, as seen in Luke's encounter with a Rogue Sith spirit in the Star Wars #43.
  • The Rogue Sith's eternal spirit may have set the foundations for the Sith Eternal cult.
  • The Sith Eternal's symbol has apparent ties to this Rogue Sith, hinting at his influence on Palpatine's future cult.

Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, Luke Skywalker has been discovering the secrets of the dark side during his attempt to purify the corrupted kyber crystal of an ancient Sith Lord. However, the pain and suffering of this "Rogue Sith" have seen his spirit living on long after the death of his physical body.

Following Luke's initial attempt to connect with this piece of red kyber as seen in Marvel Comics Star Wars #35, the Star Wars #43 by Charles Soule, Steven Cummings, and Jethro Morales will see Luke face-to-face with the spirit of this Rogue Sith living within the kyber itself. Revealing to Luke that he has continued to live through his pain and suffering, the future Sith Eternal cult may be based on this concept and the enduring power of one's darkest emotions.

By focusing on the pain and loss of his severed hand, Luke discovers that he's able to break free from his imprisonment, a concerning notion given the implication that he tapped into the power of the dark side. Regardless, the idea that this Rogue Sith is potentially setting up the foundations of the Sith Eternal is quite exciting.

Star Wars' New Rogue Sith Reveals Key Dark Side Ideologies

Pain Never Stops

New Rogue Sith in Star Wars Comics

The Rogue Sith's comments to Luke in this new preview communicate something very important about the Sith and how they manipulate the dark side of the Force. By focusing on their pain and suffering, those dark emotions can become a weapon, one that can be wielded to provide strength and greater power in the eyes of the Sith Lords.

The idea is that pain is what's truly eternal, especially considering that the Sith have no way of becoming Force ghosts like the Jedi. Instead, Sith must tether their spirits to objects, locations, or even other people, explaining how Palpatine was able to transfer his spirit to clone hosts created by the Sith Eternal as seen in Rise of Skywalker. However, this new preview does suggest that a Sith's eternal pain is how the spirit is maintained to begin with, even after the physical body has been destroyed.

Is This Rogue Sith Setting Up The Sith Eternal?

Emperor's Palpatine's Sith Cult

Rogue Sith Throne Sith Eternal Insignia in Star Wars 35

Although the Sith Eternal cult in Palpatine's service was not fully revealed until the events of Rise of Skywalker, it's important to note that their insignia was originally used by ancient Sith assassins. To that end, the very same symbol was featured above this new Rogue Sith's throne as seen in Star Wars #35. As such, it's certainly possible that the Rogue Sith could be revealed as a precursor to the Sith Eternal, inspiring their core beliefs and dark side ideology considering his existence as an enduring spirit of pain tethered to his own corrupted kyber crystal in the Star Wars canon.
