Summary

  • The Star Wars sequel trilogy introduced many new planets, including Jakku, Takodana, and Ilum/Starkiller Base.
  • These planets are located in various regions of the Star Wars galaxy, such as the Outer Rim and the Unknown Regions.
  • Some planets have significant historical and narrative importance, such as Jakku being Rey's homeworld and Ilum/Starkiller Base being transformed into a superweapon.

The Star Wars sequel trilogy featured many different planets, and this list explains all of them, from Jakku to Exegol. When George Lucas launched Star Wars back in 1977, he went to great lengths to establish the sheer scale of his saga. Ever since then, every new Star Wars movie or TV show has added new worlds and systems, fleshing out the Unknown Regions, difficult to explore because of hyperspace anomalies.

The Star Wars sequel trilogy - set during after the New Republic Era - is mostly set on the Outer Rim. This is because so many of these planets are remote and uninhabited, allowing groups such as the First Order and the Resistance to operate with a degree of secrecy. The Galactic Core - including planets from the prequels such as Coruscant - is almost entirely absent. Here are all the planets from the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

18 Jakku

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker

Location

Within the Western Reaches of the Inner Rim

Other key appearances

Chuck Wendig's "Aftermath" trilogy, Claudia Gray's Lost Stars

Rey's homeworld, Jakku is renowned as a junkyard planet in the far Western Reaches of the Outer Rim. This was the site of the final battle between the Empire and the New Republic a year after Return of the Jedi, with Palpatine's agents turning the planet into a gigantic bomb that would obliterate their enemies. New Republic agents successfully defused the bomb during the Battle of Jakku, however, and the planet survived - becoming a safe-haven for Rey's parents when they fled from the First Order years later. Jakku is the first planet seen in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the world where Finn deserts and meets Rey.

Hosnian Prime's destruction created a power vacuum the First Order immediately occupied in the galaxy.

D'Qar is an Outer Rim world covered in hills and forests noted for its ring – something not very common in Star Wars. The Resistance had their headquarters there for years, and it's where many missions like the attack on Starkiller Base are launched from. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Vader: Immortal

The only prequel world in the sequels, Mustafar is a lava planet in the Outer Rim where Anakin dueled Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. A planet rich in the Force, Mustafar was turned to the dark side when its ruled Lady Corvax attempted to perform a dark side ritual to conquer death itself. It became coveted by the Sith, with Palpatine sending the Separatist leaders there to be slain by Darth Vader - only for Obi-Wan to intervene. Darth Vader had the spirit of the ancient Sith heretic Darth Momin help him construct a fortress that would allow him to tap into the Force on Mustafar, but by the time of the sequels, this is just a ruin. The planet itself is actually recovering from its millennia-old dark side taint, explaining why Kylo Ren finds an area with trees and vegetation in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
