Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew episode 1 & 2While I absolutely love Starring Jude Law as Jod Na Nawood who helps a group of four kids who find themselves thrust from their homeworld and lost in the greater Star Wars galaxy, the trailers for the new show teased some very exciting music elements. However, I'm somewhat disappointed following the show's two-episode premiere.

In Skeleton Crew episodes 1 & 2, Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), Neel (Robert Timothy Smith), KB (Kyriana Kratter), and Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong) find themselves launched into the Star Wars galaxy after exploring a buried cargo freighter on their homeworld of At Attin. As such, these kids are now lost in space trying to make it back home while evading greedy pirates seeking a lost treasure connected to their planet. While the first two episodes of Skeleton Crew do a wonderful job of kicking off this series and premise, there's one big thing that I hope the Star Wars show includes going forward.

The Skeleton Crew Trailer Used Real-World Music In A Wonderfully Creative Way

Major Tom (Coming Home) in Huttese

A popular real-world song was used in the marketing for Skeleton Crew, albeit in a very unique and exciting way. Connecting to the show's Amblin inspirations and 80s vibes, Peter Schilling's "Major Tom (Coming Home)" was used in Skeleton Crew's official trailer. However, it was not used in a way that anyone could have expected as the song had been redone especially for the Star Wars trailer.

Rather than being the original song, this new pop cover was done in the Star Wars alien language of Huttese. This was a very clever means of making a familiar real-world song fit into the Star Wars franchise, and it instantly got me hyped about the new series and its aesthetic. That said, the song has yet to be featured in the show itself following Skeleton Crew's premiere episodes. Likewise, no other song in Huttese has been featured either.

Skeleton Crew's Soundtrack Is Nothing Like The Trailer

An Original (And Fitting) Score By Mick Giacchino

In contrast, the music that's thus far been heard in Skeleton Crew thus far is noticeably different. Rather than providing those 80s vibes, the score from Mick Giacchino leans more into the show's pirate elements. After all, Skeleton Crew is heavily inspired by The Goonies, which also features pirates and lost treasure. Skeleton Crew also has a handful of Easter eggs and nods to other pirate media such as Treasure Island and Peter Pan.

Keeping that in mind, the score by Mick Giacchino is very fitting in the sense that it's a Star Wars show full of pirates. I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with it by any means. That said, I can't help but feel that it lacks the cutting-edge and major excitement I felt from Skeleton Crew's trailer with such an iconic song that had been specially remixed to fit into the Star Wars galaxy.

Will Skeleton Crew's Trailer Music Inform The Show At All?

I'm Still Really Hoping For Huttese Covers

Sy Snootles sings in Return of the Jedi.

That being said, there's certainly still time and far more of the Star Wars galaxy to be explored as Skeleton Crew continues. Beyond the two-episode premiere, there are still six more episodes to go. That means there's still plenty of opportunity for an alien band to be featured at some point to potentially provide the "Major Tom" Huttese cover in the show itself, or perhaps some other song in the same style, rather than just being part of the trailer alone (which I feel would be a major disservice).

"Is it too much to ask for an alien cover of Cyndi Lauper's "The Goonies 'R' Good Enough"? It would totally sound like a song Sy Snootles would sing."

Having a band play some 80s songs in alien languages at some point does feel like the easiest way for Skeleton Crew to have both its pirate aesthetic and 80s vibes simultaneously to achieve that true Goonies feel. I would love a sequence that pays homage to The Max Rebo band first seen in Jabba the Hutt's palace in Return of the Jedi. At any rate, my fingers are certainly crossed that a Huttese cover of "Major Tom (Coming Home)" will get its time to shine in Skeleton Crew beyond just the trailer.

In that same vein, one can hope that even more covers could be featured as well. For example, is it too much to ask for an alien cover of Cyndi Lauper's "The Goonies 'R' Good Enough"? It would totally sound like a song Sy Snootles would sing.
