In The Acolyte episode 3, when Mae and Osha's homeworld and coven, the witches of Brendok, were finally introduced, the girls' mothers, Mother Aniseya and Mother Koril, referenced the twins being conceived in a mysterious way. While it initially seemed as though the girls had been created by the Force itself, as Anakin Skywalker was, that wasn't confirmed. Now, The Acolyte episode 7 has revealed much about their conception—and, no, they aren't the Chosen One.

There'd Been Some Theories Mae & Osha's Origin Infringed On The Chosen One Prophecy

The Acolyte episode 3 revealed that Mother Aniseya created Mae and Osha and Mother Koril carried them. This revelation suggested two things: one, that the twins didn't have a father, and, two, Mother Aniseya almost certainly used the Force for this immaculate conception. In fact, later, Mother Koril warned Mother Aniseya about the dangers of the Jedi uncovering the truth about how she made the twins, again heavily hinting that it was with the Force.

Both the absence of a father and the creation of the twins via the Force had many outraged because this seemingly infringed upon Anakin Skywalker's claim to the Chosen One prophecy. This prophecy was a major part of the prequel trilogy. It was the very reason the Jedi ultimately agreed to break their rule about older Jedi Initiates and overlook the glaring issues Anakin already had with attachments, fear, and emotion in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace.

This prophecy also plagued Anakin throughout the prequel trilogy and Star Wars: The Clone Wars because it put an immense amount of pressure on him and was something to constantly live up to; the Jedi frequently discussed the meaning of this prophecy, both when he was there and in their Council chambers without him present. Of course, one of the most well-known references to this prophecy came in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith when Obi-Wan Kenobi yelled, "You were the Chosen One!" to Anakin on Mustafar.

While there remains some debate about whether Anakin was the Chosen One or whether it was really his son, Luke, Anakin Skywalker is the Chosen One of Star Wars, and the prophecy makes that quite clear. In the novel Master & Apprentice by Claudia Gray, the prophecy is revealed to be:

"A Chosen One shall come, born of no father, and through him will ultimate balance in the Force be restored."

In the end, not only does this solidify Anakin Skywalker as the true Chosen One foretold in the prophecy, but it also confirms that Osha and Mae cannot be the Chosen One.

For one, the prophecy quite obviously refers to a male Chosen One. Sure, arguably the use of 'he' could be employed as a gender-ambiguous pronoun, but that seems extremely unlikely. If the intention of the prophecy is to help the Jedi identify the Chosen One, specificity would surely be key.

More importantly, though, no matter what happens in the final episode of The Acolyte or any (not yet confirmed) additional seasons, Mae and Osha do not bring balance to the Force. The Acolyte is set just 100 years before The Phantom Menace in The Star Wars timeline, so it cannot be all that long before Palpatine and his Sith master, Darth Plagueis, begin working in the shadows. Clearly, the twins do not bring balance in the end.

Now We Know What Really Happened With Mae & Osha

It remains unclear what exactly the conception of the twins looked like, including whether a father was involved. The Acolyte has intentionally been ambiguous about this, either because it is a mystery that is yet to be revealed or perhaps because it just isn't all that important. What is important, however, is what The Acolyte episode 7 revealed to be the true miracle of their birth. Namely, rather than being created by the Force itself, as Anakin was, Mae and Osha were one person split into two using the Force.

This is revealed in episode 7 when Torbin takes blood samples from Osha and Mae to obtain their midi-chlorian counts and discovers that they have completely identical symbionts. Although Star Wars has yet to define exactly what a symbiont is, that definition is less important than what this revelation evidently suggests. After learning of this oddity, Master Indara reveals that such a thing could only be possible if the twins were not two separate beings, but rather one being or one consciousness split in half.

Mae & Osha Aren't The Chosen One; They're Something Completely Different

Mae and Osha are undeniably special in Star Wars, but neither of them is the Chosen One. For the reasons already mentioned, the two don't fit the prophecy, but this added insight from episode 7 also revealed that they represent something brand-new (and exciting) in the franchise. What's important isn't that they may have had no father, but rather that they are really one person in two bodies.

The implications of this are fascinating and yet to be revealed. While many had speculated that the twins might represent another major Star Wars concept, the Force Dyad, introduced in the sequel trilogy, they seem to be distinct from that, too. In a Force Dyad, like the one Rey and Kylo Ren shared, two people are linked to one another through the Force, able to bend the rules of space and time. Presumably, twins who are strong in the Force may be more likely to have such a bond. However, that isn't what is unique about Osha and Mae, either.

Rather, the twins are something completely different in Star Wars, and that brand-new territory leaves possibilities wide open. For one, it's unlikely Osha and Mae know this about themselves, which is going to be a shocking and life-altering reveal if and when it comes. Moreover, though, this is such an astounding manipulation of the Force, that Mother Koril is absolutely right to be wary of the Jedi's reaction if they find out.

Unfortunately, not all of these intricacies may be addressed in the final episode of The Acolyte. The show has an incredible amount of ground to cover in the single episode left, and that will seemingly mean not everything left hanging in the balance is going to be addressed. Moreover, a second season of the show hasn't been confirmed, meaning some of these questions may never be answered. At minimum, though, The Acolyte has made it clear that the twins are not the Chosen One in Star Wars.

The final episode of The Acolyte releases on Tuesday, July 16th, at 9 PM EST/6 PM PST on Disney+.
