There's an exciting slate of The Mandalorian, the highly anticipated first live-action Star Wars show. Following the incredible success of the series, Lucasfilm continued to concentrate on developing multiple other projects for the streaming service.
To this point, there have been two live-action Star Wars shows on Disney+, as well as three animated shows. The Mandalorian is the biggest of them all and season 2 set up the surprise spinoff, the Mandalorian universe is set to expand, familiar characters are retaking the spotlight, and new adventures are being created.
After COVID-19 blocked plans for a convention where Lucasfilm can present its plans to fans in person, the return of Star Wars Celebration in 2022 changed that. The studio didn't waste its opportunity to directly show the franchise's ionate fanbase what lies ahead. Although any talk of the future of Star Wars movies was left out, the Star Wars Celebration opening provided some big news about 2022 and 2023 Star Wars shows.
Obi-Wan Kenobi
The long-awaited fight with Darth Vader on Mustafar and sees Obi-Wan living on Tatooine while watching over a young Luke Skywalker. With Obi-Wan Kenobi set for release on Disney+ during the middle of Star Wars Celebration 2022, the news associated with the TV show was rather small. Those in attendance were treated to the first live playing of John Williams' new Obi-Wan Kenobi theme, as well as given the ability to see the first two episodes hours before they debuted on Disney+.
Andor
Star Wars Celebration 2022 proved to deliver plenty of big updates about first Andor trailer was finally released online and highlighted the spy story about Cassian's role in the rebellion. The show was also confirmed to take place five years before Rogue One, as the first 12 episodes of the series will unfold over this time in Cassian's life. In addition to showing the first look at Genieve O'Reilly's return as Mon Mothma and new cast like Stellan Skarsgård - confirmed to be a Rebel leader - and Adria Arjona, Star Wars Celebration also brought confirmation that Andor season 1 releases on Disney+ on August 31st, with the first two episodes releasing at once.
All of the details and footage from season 1 was not the last of Andor news at Star Wars Celebration 2022 either. It was officially announced that the Star Wars TV show is returning for a second season. Andor season 2's announcement included confirmation that it will contain another 12 episodes, bringing the series to 24 episodes in total when it concludes. It was also revealed that the second season will explore the next four years of Cassian's life after season 1. Head writer Tony Gilroy even teased that Andor season 2 will lead directly up to the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, meaning it could end with his mission to the Ring of Kafrene to obtain information about the Empire's creation of the Death Star.
The Mandalorian
The Star Wars TV news at Star Wars Celebration 2022 also included some exciting teases for The Mandalorian season 3. The original series created by Jon Favreau has become the flagship show for Disney+ as audiences became attached to Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu's bond. The constant surprises - like appearances from Boba Fett, Luke Skywalker, and Ahsoka Tano - have also helped The Mandalorian leave a major cultural imprint that season 3 is likely to continue. One of the big announcements to come was when viewers will see the next chapter of Din and Grogu's story after their appearances in The Book of Boba Fett. Lucasfilm confirmed The Mandalorian season 3 releases on Disney+ in February 2023.
It was also confirmed at Star Wars Celebration 2022 that Katee Sackhoff returns as Bo-Katan Kryze in The Mandalorian season 3. Sackhoff made her live-action debut as the character during season 2 after previously voicing Bo-Katan in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and The Mandalorian season 3 trailer include a potentially villainous turn for Bo-Katan and a trip to Mandalore, the legendary home planet of Mandalorians.
Ahsoka
Spinning off from her appearance in The Mandalorian season 2, Lucasfilm's Ahsoka is releasing on Disney+ sometime in 2023.
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew
Star Wars Celebration 2022 also brought the first official details about a new series from Star Wars: Skeleton Crew after it was previously only known as Grammar Rodeo during its rumored state. The new Star Wars TV show takes place after The Mandalorian, but it is not clear exactly where it falls in the Star Wars timeline.
It was also confirmed that the Star Wars: Skeleton Crew cast stars Jude Law. Character details were not revealed for Law, but it was confirmed that the show focuses on a group of kids roughly 10 years old. These children get lost in the galaxy far, far away and the new Star Wars TV show is about their journey getting back. Despite the young characters at the focus of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, Jon Watts said that it is not a kid's show - promising that it will have something to offer to audiences of all ages.
