When the original Star Wars trilogy kicked off in 1977, it was a beloved phenomenon that pretty much took over the world, and for so many fans who grew up with it, it was fairly flawless. Over four decades later, with two other trilogies and a ton of lore in the franchise, the original trilogy is still held on a pedestal, but new generations have brought new opinions.

Many have grown to see flaws within the trilogy, which is natural, but taking that a step further, some have out and out unpopular views on the movies, whether that be to do with the characters or quality, something which is often voiced on Reddit.

Threepio = Jar Jar Binks

C-3PO walks alone through Tatooine and comes across the remains of a Krayt Dragon in A New Hope

C-3PO, alongside R2-D2, is a mainstay of the original trilogy, guiding viewers through the first movie while being a key and often comical sidekick through the other two movies as a beloved, some even say underrated character.

Redditor u/thedeevolution, though, says Threepio is nothing more than the original trilogy's version of Jar Jar Binks, even saying that Jar Jar is less annoying. Of course, Threepio's comic relief is not for everyone, but even fewer appreciate Binks' humor.

The Lack Of Jedi Makes A New Hope Boring

Obi-Wan gives Luke his father's lightsaber

The Skywalker saga and Star Wars as a whole would never have become the phenomenon it is without A New Hope, then called Star Wars, a movie that changed cinema and is beloved by so many.

However, a The Phantom Menace as their least favorite. With many adoring the movie and finding the Galactic Civil War aspect enthralling, this is definitely an unpopular opinion.

The Empire Strikes Back Is Better Without The Battle Of Hoth

One of the many beloved aspects of The Empire Strikes Back, and one of the ways it goes against the grain of typical movies, is by having the large scale battle kick off the story in the form of the Battle of Hoth, a key point in the Galactic Civil War,

Redditor u/RakeemD holds the extremely unpopular opinion that the whole of The Empire Strikes Back would be better off without the battle. It is a highlight to many in a film that is filled with them, and it is hard to imagine Empire without it.

The Dialogue & Acting Are Just As Bad As The Prequels

One of the biggest criticisms the prequel trilogy has continued to have since its release is the dialogue throughout it, with the performances of many actors also being vilified. It was all seen as a huge step down from the originals.

Redditor u/PetevonPete disagrees, though, saying that the original trilogy contains dialogue and acting just as bad as the prequels, but that it is forgiven more than the prequels. There is an argument to be had for some of the dialogue and acting, particularly in the first and third being, on occasion, as bad as that of the prequels, but it is an unpopular one.

Attack Of The Clones > The Empire Strikes Back

There are many ways fans order the Star Wars movies in of their favorites, but the most common in of best and worst over the years seems to have been The Empire Strikes Back as the best and Attack of the Clones as the worst.

Redditor u/SithLord13 makes a very outrageous claim, though, that Attack is better than Empire, or at least they prefer the former. They state the dogfight is better than the iconic asteroid field chase, that Yoda vs. Dooku is better than Luke vs. Vader, and that the color palette is superior.

The Empire Strikes Back Is Not Epic Compared To The Other 2 Movies

Han flies the Milennium Falcon through an Asteroid field to escape the Empire in The Empire Strikes Back

Speaking of the iconic asteroid chase and Luke vs. Vader, they are two of many scenes that add to the grandeur of The Empire Strikes back, with others like Yoda's training and the Battle of Hoth doing so also.

Redditor u/Piki112 believes that compared to the movies on either side of it, Empire is not an epic movie; it has a good story but pretty much lacks the fun epicness of the others. Given the iconic scenes mentioned earlier, it is definitely an unpopular way of thinking.

The Empire Strikes Back Is Boring

As has been established, Empire is wildly popular, and on top of that, is incredibly rewatchable. For most, it is an entertaining and engaging watch, both on first viewing and rewatches.

Redditor u/rusty_panda takes the previous entry a step further and states that the movie is not entertaining to watch; it is, in fact, boring and is far sured by Return Of The Jedi. It is one thing to prefer Return to Empire; it is a whole new level of unpopular to say Empire is flat out boring.

The Original Trilogy Dueling Is Boring, Trash, & Unrealistic

There has and forever will be debates amongst fans over which lightsaber duel is the best from the Skywalker Saga, with the Duel of the Fates and Battle of the Heroes often challenging Luke and Vader's pair of battles.

Redditor compared to the prequel trilogy's duels, the original battles are trash and that they look like they are acting rather than fighting. They go on to say their opinion on them has warmed, but there is no doubt that whether you prefer the prequels or the original's approach to lightsaber dueling, that is an unpopular opinion.

It Is The Worst Of The Three Trilogies

Every fan has their preferred ranking of Star Wars movies and their own personal ranking of the trilogies. But more often than not, fans will see the original trilogy as the best of the three, even if it is not necessarily their favorite (which it usually is).

Redditor u/chingchongpin say they do not understand why the original trilogy is rated so highly. They point to Luke being whinier than Anakin, the acting being the worst of the trilogies, the plot holes, and the "laughably bad" fight scenes, as being reasons why the trilogy is the objectively worst of the three.

Return Of The Jedi Kicked Off Star Wars' Mediocrity

Star Wars is such a beautifully generational franchise, with the prequel trilogy now being adored and popular due to generations growing up with it and people appreciating its story.

Redditor u/CG_Oglethorpe argues, though, that Star Wars was on the decline after the original trilogy and blames Return Of The Jedi for kicking that time off. This point basically says the prequel trilogy is not great and that neither is Return of the Jedi, with the latter and its poor quality being such a significant reason for Star Wars losing its quality.
