As is the case with nearly all major AAA releases, Bethesda's space ARPG, Starfield will receive a plethora of additional content included in the pre-order bonuses and several special editions for those who purchase the game. Starfield will also be following the pattern of other new Xbox first-party releases, with the title's base game being made available from day one as part of the Xbox and PC Game subscription.
The 45-minute-long Starfield Direct event directly followed the June 2023 Xbox Games Showcase and granted players an in-depth look at the highly anticipated title, providing more information about its world, story, and gameplay elements. Bethesda's space epic will explore The Settled Systems, an area approximately 50 light-years out from the Solar System during a conflict called the Colony War. Players will be able to fully customizable their character and embark on their exploration missions in a completely buildable ship called The Frontier. Many of Starfield's bonus perks lean heavily into this level of customization, with a variety of in-game skins for items on offer across all editions of the game.
All Starfield Pre-Orders Have Bonus Skins
Anyone who pre-orders Starfield in any of its digital or physical forms will receive the "Old Mars Skin Pack". This pack is a collection of in-game bonus skins that make the game's Laser Cutter, Deep Mining Helmet, and Deep Mining Pack display a deep red and light grey color scheme. All pre-orders of Starfield with the exception of the game's Standard Edition will also come with up to 5 days of early access, allowing players to play the base game on September 1st, ahead of Starfield’s main September 6 release.
Starfield's Digital Edition Has A Story Expansion
Starfield's Digital Edition includes a digital copy of the base game, alongside a new story expansion "Shattered Space", which will be available to players upon the game's September 6 release and will hopefully follow in the footsteps of Bethesda's other well-received story expansions, such as Fallout 3's "The Pit", or Oblivion's "The Shivering Isles". This edition also includes a new Constellation skin pack, which will be available for the Equinox Laser Rifle, as well as the player's spacesuit, helmet, and boost pack.
The Digital Edition will also come with a digital Starfield artbook which includes early concept art of the game, as well as the game's original soundtrack by the award-winning composer Inon Zur, who previously worked on major game franchises such as Fallout, Dragon Age, and Prince of Persia. Players will also be able to upgrade from the digital Standard Edition to the Edition to receive this additional content at a later date.
Players Can Upgrade Starfield's Physical Copies To Receive Content
Those who have purchased Starfield's Standard Edition on physical media also don't need to worry about missing out on the Edition's content, as it will be available via an upgrade. On top of the aforementioned digital content, Starfield's physical Edition upgrade also comes with a Steelbook display case and a Constellation patch. Players will be able to purchase the Edition upgrade from both the Microsoft and Xbox storefronts and all participating retailers.
Starfield's Constellation Edition Includes Several Physical Bonuses
Starfield's Constellation Edition is one for the most hardcore fans. Priced at nearly $300, this edition contains all the physical and digital content from the other versions of the game and has the unique selling point of a special, fully-functional smartwatch that can sync up to the player's phone to let them know exactly how many hundreds of hours they've spent playing the massive space title.
The Constellation Edition's watch is designed by the UK prop company, The Wand Company, to look like the LPV6 Chronomark Smartwatch featured in the game. It also comes in its own protective case with an "intricate locking mechanism" that's been designed to look like the one used by characters across the Constellation organization, a group of space explorers committed to unlocking the mysteries of the galaxy.
As is the case with several modern Collector's editions - with Marvel's Spider-Man 2 being the most recent example - Starfield's Constellation Edition only includes a digital copy of the game, despite having the Edition's physical perks, such as a Steelbook display case. This practice has been a point of controversy among collectors, but Starfield seems to have found a way to turn this into a perk, as the Constellation edition comes with a physical Credit Stick replica from the game with the digital game code laser-etched onto it instead of a standard disc.
Xbox Is Releasing A Limited Edition Controller And Headset
Bethesda Game Studios has also teamed up with the Xbox hardware team to celebrate the release of Starfield with a limited edition Xbox controller and a wireless headset. Both the controller and headset include a sleek white, red, grey, and gold design inspired by elements seen throughout Starfield. The controller features full side and back grips that resemble the s of a spaceship as well as a metallic bronze directional pad.
The Starfield Limited Edition Wireless Headset is a first for Xbox, being the first-ever custom headset created by the company, building on Microsoft’s pre-existing and very well-received $99 Xbox Wireless headset. To match the controller's trigger design, the headset sports a matching transparent and metallic bronze mic boom, and both items' faceplates are accented with Constellation colors and printed with a control scheme inspired by Starfield's customizable ship. The headset is priced at $124.99 and the controller at $79.99, and both are available now for purchase on Xbox.com.
The Xbox-exclusive Starfield looks set to be one of the biggest games of 2023, combining elements from Bethesda's classic RPG series such as The Elder Scrolls and Fallout with those of other acclaimed space titles such as No Man's Sky's vast space exploration, and Mass Effect's branching storytelling. With the various editions on offer, Xbox and PC players should have plenty to look forward to when the highly-anticipated game releases on September 6.
