Summary

  • Bethesda plans to release more Starfield expansions beyond "Shattered Space."
  • "Shattered Space" will focus on the mysterious House Va'ruun, but future expansions may not answer all player questions from the base game.
  • Expansions aim to enhance player experience and tone, exploring new stories and star systems.

More Deluxe and Constellation editions, but there hadn't been any word on future content releases beyond that until now.

In an interview with MrMattyPlays, Howard stated his intention to release more Starfield expansions for what he hopes will be "a very long time," confirming, "We're planning for the one after [Shattered Space]. So there will be another one."

This should come as great news to Starfield players, as they will definitely be getting two major expansions, at least, with hopes for many more. Although considering how Shattered Space is launching roughly a year after the base game's launch, with Howard previously confirming a Fall 2024 window, it could be some time in between expansions, and they may come annually.

Starfield showcased its first DLC, Shattered Space, in a trailer during the Xbox Games Showcase. Here’s what it reveals about the expansion.

Starfield's Expansions Are A Great Way To Build Upon Established Lore

But Bethesda's Goal Isn't To Answer Every Question

As players have long speculated, Shattered Space will focus on House Va'ruun, one of the optional religions players can pick in Starfield. Throughout the game, players can run into House Va'ruun zealots and learn more about the house's beliefs and home planet, Va'ruun'kai. Despite being able to learn about their culture, their base of operations on the planet Va’ruun’kai wasn't shown in the game, and its star system is unknown, with the group going to great lengths to keep it a secret, making it an obvious pick for a first full expansion pack.

While Shattered Space will attempt to solve the mysteries of House Va'ruun, Howard did reveal that Bethesda's mindset when approaching future expansions isn't to answer every question players may have after finishing the base game. Instead, Howard stated that the team is mainly considering what they can add to the game in of an "experience or a tone," which would explain why the first trailer for Shattered Space leaned more into a horror aesthetic.

It will certainly be interesting to see where Bethesda could take Starfield next, as there's plenty of opportunity for new stories across the game's vast galaxy. There have been some criticisms that many of the more procedurally-generated planets in the game can currently feel empty - although the more players explore, the more interesting places they're beginning to find - these expansions and updates would certainly be a great way to bring some of these star systems to life.

Bethesda Game Studios presents Starfield - the first original IP from the studio in twenty-five-plus years. Set in the year 2310, the United Colonies and Freestar Collective are observing a shaky truce after a war set 20 years prior. The player will customize their character as a member of a space exploration team called Constellation while navigating The Settled Systems and the conflicts between the warring factions. According to Bethesda, players can explore over 100 systems and 1000 planets to find resources and build their ships, living out their own sci-fi journeys.
