The revelation that Starscream was quite different before he became Megatron’s traitorous second-in-command shows how complex the new Transformers series truly is. What the creators have achieved with what started off as little more than a toy tie-in is truly remarkable, as Johnson and the artists he’s worked with thus far have managed to wring a surprising amount of emotional storytelling out of Hasbro’s saga of transforming robots.

Although it only lasts two issues, this Starscream-focused arc promises to have major ramifications as Transformers enters its second year at Skybound. Even though he was left as little more than a dying husk after his confrontation with Soundwave, Starscream remains a major force in the Energon Universe. Whether he attempts to re-take control of the Decepticons or forms his own new faction to stand against the Autobots, readers definitely shouldn’t count out Starscream in the Energon Universe era of Transformers - as well as G.I. Joe.
