The fan-favorite character Anansi from Static Shock is going to finally be making his comic book debut this summer. Originally voiced by Carl Lumbly (the DCAU's voice of Martian Manhunter) Anansi first appeared in the seasons three and four episodes "Static in Africa" and "Out of Africa." Despite only appearing in two episodes, the character has received a cult following for his enigmatic personality and fascinating lore. Now, the character is bringing that celebrated lore and charisma to the comics.

During the series, Static meets Anansi while on a family vacation to Africa, where Anansi operates as a superhero. He has built a reputation as Africa's most famous crime fighter thanks to his spider powers. In an interesting reversal, Static: Team-Up: Anansi—which takes place between the events of Static: Season One and Static: Shadows of Dakota —sees Anansi visiting Dakota and seeking out Static's help to investigate a supernatural cult.

The latest run of Static comics has gone out of its way to present new twists on classic characters from both the animated series and the original Milestone Comics. The latest issue, Static: Shadows of Dakota #2 by Nikolas Draper-Ivey and Vita Ayala reveals a new twist on the character of D-Struct, who is presented differently from how he appears in other the Milestone Comics or in the TV show. Anansi could be due for a modern revamp himself.

Seeing how the creative team revisits the character of Anansi should be especially interesting considering how so much remains unexplored about the character. Since he only appears in two episodes, his character still remains shrouded in mystery to the point that his secret identity was never even revealed. Narcisse and Stewart III have the option to either maintain that mystery essence or create something totally new. Fans of Static Shock are going to have to wait and see how the new era of MIlestone Comics reinterprets the beloved Anansi character.
