Stranger Things 2 Sets Up the Show's Endgame

While the series finale of more perplexing, but there's no guarantee it will land the same way the first one did. Luckily, fans won't have to wait much longer to decided for themselves.

While the premiere of the new season is still a few months away, last weekend's Comic-Con has meant an uptick in marketing for Stranger Things. That includes the release of an Stranger Things season 2 trailer - which ratcheted up the pop culture references and spooky tone. By nature of the series, there's still a lot we don't know about the main threat in Stranger Things' new season. It's clear now, however, that Will's time in the Upside Down has had a dramatic effect on him and that will continue to resonate, throughout the rest of the series.

Collider spoke with Stranger Things co-creator Ross Duffer at San Diego Comic-Con, where the writer itted an overall arc for the series will be established in Stranger Things season 2:

“Well we started having those real conversations after the first season came out, and I think us and Shawn, and we talked to Netflix—we sort of have a rough plan and I think the important thing for us was to really start to lay the groundwork this season for what would be the arc for the rest of the show. In of exact number of seasons we’re not sure, but I know that Matt and I wanna stick with it and just sort of finish it out. But again we don’t want to linger too long, we just want to tell the story that we want to tell and get out. Hopefully people are like, ‘I want more!’ and that’s great, but that’s sort of how we want to leave it. In of spinoffs, I don’t think we’ve gotten that far. Because for us it’s really just about focusing on this story and just getting it done.”

As Duffer makes clear, the longevity of Stranger Things and the potential for spinoffs is up in the air. Likely, the success of season 2 will factor into the decision, but at least one star of the show envisions many more years of Stranger Things to come. And even if overall reception to this year's batch of episodes is negative, the viewership numbers will still likely be high thanks to the success of season one. So if Netflix does renew the show, how often can we expect to see new episodes?

“We’re not quite on the yearly cycle, as you can tell. But we’re gonna do it as fast as we can without totally burning out.”

With cable channels like HBO and streaming services like Netflix, creators have a lot more leeway when it comes to the production schedule they have. With no particular time of year to work around and no time slots fill or rs to satisfy, Netflix can put out a new season of a show whenever they please. While this may frustrate some fans, it also means the minds behind a show can make sure they craft the best version of the series each time. So while the longer wait may be a bit annoying, the result is that Stranger Things season 2 could be every bit as good as season 1, for it.
