Warning: Spoilers for Stranger Things season 4, volume 1!

Joseph Quinn's Eddie Munson wears a black handkerchief in his back pocket throughout character debut in Stranger Things season 4, and he's instantly become a fan favorite. Despite carrying an intimidating persona when he's first introduced, his kindness and good nature have proven why he is a suitable ally for the Hawkins group against Vecna.

Eddie witnesses Chrissy Cunningham's death and is the last person to see her alive, so it makes sense why he becomes a wanted man. Granted, those outside the core group aren't aware of the terrors that reside under Hawkins. Chrissy's boyfriend, Jason, leads the charge to find "Eddie the Freak," believing his connection to Dungeons & Dragons is the cause of the deaths in town. With the help of Dustin, Steve, and the others, Eddie stays hidden until he officially s the group in investigating Vecna.

From his very first scene in Stranger Things season 4, it's clear that Eddie is unlike any character seen in the series. The leader of the Hellfire Club is a bit older than his peers and has embraced the heavy metal rocker look of the '80s with his leather jacket and layered jean jacket with cutoff sleeves. The jacket also features a large patch featuring the metal band Dio. The rest of Eddie's Black Sabbath-inspired appearance matches the rocker aesthetic, including the long hair, ripped black jeans, and big rings or chains. There's also the black handkerchief or bandana that hangs out of Eddie's pocket, which could fall into the rocker appearance that Eddie is trying to embody. However, other theories are connecting Eddie's hanky to the character's sexuality.

As pointed out (via the LGBTQ+ community. The "hanky code," as it's often called, was around in the '80s and still serves as a tradition where individuals use a color-coded system through a handkerchief to inform others of their sexual orientation or roles. In this case, the black bandana in the back left pocket would indicate S&M preferences, but more importantly, the black handkerchief and existing code hint that Eddie is gay in Stranger Things.

While several theories claim that Eddie could be a member of the LGBTQ+ community, Stranger Things has not made any attempts to confirm or debunk this notion. The vague representation of LGBTQ+ characters has been a problem in Stranger Things, as the show continues to allow for viewer interpretation rather than direct confirmations, like the case with Will Byers and how it affects Robin's story. Still, it will be interesting to see if the show makes the same mistakes with Eddie or if the black bandana was just a costume oversight when curating the rocker appearance in season 4.
