Players have modded the cat in Stray to make them look like their own pets, swapping out the protagonist's ginger fur to resemble their own feline friends. Stray was released earlier in July to high critical and fan acclaim as cat-lovers were keen to dive into the sci-fi world as the backpack-wearing orange tabby.
Stray sees players controlling a stray cat who has become separated from its group in an underground city populated by mutant creatures called Zurks that devour any being in their path. Over the course of the game, the cat and its drone companion B-12 work alongside the city's self-aware robot inhabitants to try to return to the surface once more. While Stray was received warmly in reviews for its story and its accurate depiction of a cat and how it interacts with the detailed dystopian world, many cat-lovers who played the title found themselves sharing the same complaint: they wanted to customize the cat to mirror their own.
As spotted by Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas protagonist CJ warped into the proportions of a cat in a playable mod.
As discussed in the previously mentioned Kotaku report, BlueTwelve producer Swann Martin-Raget had previously addressed why cat customization wasn't available in the game, stating that it had been discussed, but the team working on the title was quite small, and it was tricky to implement a customization system to the quality the team wanted. BlueTwelve also wanted the unnamed cat - who was based upon the studio's co-founders cat Murtaugh - to be recognizable and unique in the game with his orange fur providing a distinct look when traversing its dark, cyberpunk world.
Whether or not BlueTwelve opts to take another look at how to bring customization to the title in further patches or DLC now that the main game has been released is yet to be seen, but until then many fans seem to be pleased with the many mods on offer. Unfortunately for PlayStation players - where Stray is included in PS Plus Extra - these mods are only available for those on PC.
