Succession, like many other HBO series, dives deeply into the minds and psychologies of its characters, showing a powerful and influential family almost brought down by its internal divisions and desperate drive for power. Of course, each character has a great deal of personality and depth, and they all show different sides of themselves as the series progresses. What’s more, they also fit remarkably well into the Hogwarts Houses established in Harry Potter.

Looking at them through this lens allows for more aspects of their various personalities to emerge. So where would all of the Roys fit in at Hogwarts?

Logan Roy - Slytherin

Logan Roy is certainly one of Brian Cox’s best parts, and he imbues this character with a sinister intensity. More importantly, he shows all of the classic signs associated with those who belong in House Slytherin.

He is an ambitious man who will let nothing stand in the way of growing his media empire, not even of his own family. What’s more, in true Slytherin style, he makes sure that all of his children constantly compete with one another for his affection and for his approval.

Kendall Roy - Gryffindor

Kendall leans on a table in Succession.

Kendall Roy is one of the series most contradictory characters, for while he clearly craves his father’s approval and love, he is also driven (at times, at least) by an inner moral com.

Unlike most of the other of his family, he does seem to have at least some commitment to honor and to a sense of rightness, aligning him with the values espoused by those who belong in Gryffindor House. Unfortunately, he does lack the follow-through that would allow him to be one of that house’s best .

Roman Roy - Slytherin

Roman looks across the boardroom in Succession.

Kieran Culkin is another actor who has many fantastic roles under his belt, and Roman Roy is sure to be one of them. Like his siblings, he craves Logan’s love and approval but, unlike them, he has almost no sense of conscience. He is willing to do almost anything, and to betray almost everyone, in order to achieve dominance within the family and the company that he feels is his due.

Unfortunately for him, his Slytherin tendencies sometimes get in his own way, and he ends up being his own worst enemy.

Tom Wambsgans - Hufflepuff

Tom smiles while wearing a suit in Succession.

There is something very endearing about those who belong in Hufflepuff, especially since they often make the best kinds of friends and tend to look out for other people.

Though he is only a part of the Roy family as a result of his marriage to Shiv, Tom nevertheless shows that, in his own strange way, he does love her. He likewise has a lot of affection for Greg, and though he enjoys tormenting the young man, it’s clear that he does feel at least a measure of loyalty toward him.

Greg Hirsch - Hufflepuff

Greg from Succession looks at himself in a public bathroom mirror.

Cousin Greg is one of the outcasts of the Roy family, due in part to the fact that his grandfather and Logan, though brothers, clearly cannot stand one another. However, though he is at times weak and vacillating, Greg seems to possess the essential goodness of character that is one of the hallmarks of the Hufflepuff mentality.

This is certainly the case when he is compared to his cousins, and in this instance, his Hufflepuff characteristics often put him at the mercy of his more Slytherin-like cousins.

Shiv Roy - Ravenclaw

Shiv Roy from Succession leans over, wearing a power suit.

Shiv Roy is one of the more intelligent characters in Succession, and she always seems to want to keep people, including the audience, guessing. Even though she has some of the ambitious Slytherin traits of her siblings, she is in many ways closer to Ravenclaw than they are.

For one thing, she seems to value wisdom and knowledge more than any of the others, and while this at times puts her at a disadvantage, she also shows that it is possible for a member of Ravenclaw to have the skills to engage in some subtle politicking when the need arises.

Gerri Kellman -  Ravenclaw

Shiv is not the only Ravenclaw involved with the world of the Roys. Gerri is, without a doubt, one of the smartest characters in the show, with a clear-eyed approach to many of the problems facing the company that few of the others, even Logan, seem to have.

In that sense, she is very much a Ravenclaw, since she likes to be sure that she has all of the knowledge that she needs in order to make the most informed decision that she can.

Marcia Roy - Slytherin

Marcia lectures Kendall in Succession

Marcia is also an enigmatic character, and she doesn’t seem to want to reveal too much about herself and her motivations. It’s also hard to tell just how she feels about Roman. What is certain, however, is that she is very Slytherin in her outlook.

She is always looking to make sure that she has as much access to Logan as possible and that she uses her influence and closeness to him to ensure that her own interests and those of her son are ed for during family deliberations.

Ewan Roy - Gryffindor

Ewan talks with Logan Roy in a scene from Succession.

James Cromwell is one of those actors who has shown time and again that he is truly versatile, and he brings that versatility to bear in his performance as Ewan, Logan’s estranged brother.

Unlike Logan, who is a Slytherin, Ewan shows all of the signs of being a Gryffindor. He has a very strict moral code that he follows, and he doesn't like it when others don’t (that includes his grandson Greg, who he views as complicit with the mendacity of the rest of his family).

Connor Roy - Slytherin

A bearded Connor looks in the distance in Succession.

In some ways, Connor is the black sheep of the Roy family, and he always struggles to gain the amount of success that his younger siblings have.

However, he still demonstrates that he has the Slytherin type of ambition, because he is always trying something new, always embarking on another effort that will get him the level of praise and success that he believes is his due as a member of his family, even if he doesn’t have the qualifications to achieve everything that he sets out to accomplish.
