James Gunn confirms that fans' first look at The Suicide Squad will arrive later this month. Following David Ayer's take on the comic book property, the project will feature an ensemble with a mix of new and familiar faces. Still, the director has done a great job keeping the movie under wraps, with very little to no information released about it thus far. That's all going to change soon.
It's currently unknown how The Suicide Squad will relate to its predecessor. As mentioned, only a handful of the original cast from Ayer's cut will be involved, including Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn and Jai Courtney's Boomerang, which means that the films are linked together. That said, it will be curious how they will explain the absence of Will Smith's Deadshot, who played a big role in 2016's Suicide Squad. Some of these questions will soon be answered thanks to the DC FanDome event, which will serve as a platform for Warner Bros. to promote their confirmed slate and also announce new projects.
When asked on Twitter if he can honestly say that the studio didn't meddle with his cut of The Suicide Squad, Gunn straightforwardly said that the public can fully expect it's his vision coming to the big screen. Additionally, he also took the opportunity to hype up FanDome, confirming that fans will get a glimpse of it via the virtual gathering. Check out his full tweet below:
The question posed may seem odd, but considering what happened to Ayer's version of Suicide Squad, it's understandable that fans are concerned. Not only was the director rushed into writing the script for the 2016 film because Warner Bros. already picked a release date for it, but they also had a lot of input in its story stemming from the divisive response to Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. This resulted in last-minute reshoots that drastically changed the film's theatrical cut. It's also the reason why fans are now pushing for the Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad to be released like Justice League's Snyder Cut. With Gunn confirming that there's no meddling whatsoever in The Suicide Squad, it's become more interesting to see, especially considering what he's done with Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy movies.
Since principal photography finished before the coronavirus pandemic forced productions to be suspended, Gunn and his team have been busy editing the film. More or less, they have a completed film with a locked-in narrative; this means that the footage that will be released for The Suicide Squad will likely be a teaser trailer instead of just a cut scene. That would be a great way to kick off marketing for the film, considering that there's barely any reveal from the film aside from a cast list and the movie's logo. Between this and Snyder's confirmation that a trailer for his Justice League is also rolling out at DC FanDome, it seems like Warner Bros. is pulling all the stops to make the event a massive success.
