David Ayer says Suicide Squad into a comedy. Warner Bros. and DC Films' first anti-hero-centric film hit theaters in 2016, the same year the Ryan Reynolds-led Fox/Marvel movie did - only several months earlier. Due to the overwhelmingly positive reception that the latter got, Ayer was forced to make some changes to his Suicide Squad in order to make it more humorous.

Over the last couple of weeks, talk about Ayer's original version of the film has been dominating online discussion. This comes on the heels of Zack Snyder's has been forthcoming when asked about details of his cut, and his latest reveal sheds a light on what actually caused the alterations made to the movie.

Taking to his official Twitter , Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and the success of Deadpool - both films releasing in the first quarter of 2016. The director then finished it off by saying that these caused his "soulful drama" to be transformed into a "comedy." Check out his full tweet below:

Fans were aware that the response to Batman V Superman had a ripple effect throughout succeeding DCEU films. It's the reason why Snyder had to rewrite his original script for Justice League which was a lot darker and why Ayer had to do some final reshoots for Suicide Squad that drastically changed its story. Ayer has shared more information about his cut of the movie over the years, but recently he's been doing so more actively as he hopes Warner Bros. will extend the same courtesy they gave Snyder to him by there's little reason why the studio should be against the idea.

Warner Bros.' decision to go for a more lighthearted approach on Suicide Squad after the success of Deadpool somehow makes sense as both films focused on anti-heroes. Considering how profitable Deadpool was - earning a whopping $782 million against a $58 million budget - Warner Bros. thought that they could follow its format for guaranteed profit. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case and Ayer's plan for a much darker Suicide Squad was compromised. For what it's worth, there's no assurance that whatever is in the director's cut will be better than its theatrical counterpart, but unless it's released, the public will never know.
