After 13 episodes with highs and lows, Aaron Korsh's Suits LA was up against high expectations. But despite a talented cast, some old familiar faces returning, and doses of drama and humor, the spin-off was ultimately hollow and disappointing.
The finale introduces a brand-new character as the big bad villain, revisits the flashbacks of Ted Black's life in New York to confirm what was already revealed in episode 1, and backtracks on any serious drama and conflict that came out of season 1. Several relationships reach a fever pitch, but the way the show has developed these characters ultimately makes even that feel lacking. And considering the show's cancellation, this ending now serves as the series finale, and it's fitting that it would bring the story full circle.
Suits LA's Drama Got A Hollywood Makeover From The Original
Examining the Tinseltown Infusion into the Legal Conflicts
Suits was a spectacular legal drama with high stakes. Suits LA feigns ideas that are supposed to rise to the same heights, but with the layout of the show, the struggles between characters, and the resolution for season 1, it missed the mark by a long shot. With a struggle to find its own voice and style, switching between drama and comedy, Suits LA felt lost, and the finale only emphasizes that lack of a clear identity.
Ted Black is a boring character, and Stephen Amell's performance and lack of emotion, aside from anger, ultimately made Suits LA hard to watch.
The finale highlights the fact that Suits LA had one core idea: Ted's past in New York and his broken relationship with his father after the devastating loss of his brother. But with how much the show inserts flashbacks, it feels like everything else was simply added as filler to bulk out the story around this one detail. The issue is, Ted Black is a boring character, and Stephen Amell's performance and lack of emotion, aside from anger, ultimately made Suits LA hard to watch.
But with the show needing to create a satisfying finale and potential cliffhanger, it attempts to pull out all the stops with the whole cast. However, none of these stories were engaging or motivated us to dig deeper and eagerly await the next episode. Suits LA was just plain bad for the most part, and many of the plots and stories failed to generate genuine excitement or intrigue. It just failed to deliver an interesting, compelling, and high-stakes drama.
Suits LA Is Redundant After All Is Said & Done
Why the Spin-Off Ultimately Offers Nothing New
A legal drama with the wit and intensity of Suits set on the West Coast sounded amazing, but Suits LA didn't properly capitalize on the original show. Yes, it included cameos, but in of tone and style, Suits and Suits LA couldn't be more different. Partway through the show, it feels like they changed gears to make the show a comedy. But ultimately, Suits LA became a master of very few trades.
The best parts of the show were the brewing relationships between the cast, but even in this regard, the finale appears to reset the momentum for most parties. Beyond that, the big reveal was completely overshadowed by the fact that all the information we got was already outlined at the start of the season.
It would have been a more fitting ending to the series (had it gone on for many more seasons), but as a cliffhanger for the season, it's lacking, especially as it introduced a new and uninteresting character we'll never be invested in now.
While the conflicts at the outset were tense, the finale diffuses this tension entirely. It would have been a more fitting ending to the series (had it gone on for many more seasons), but as a cliffhanger for the season, it's lacking, especially as it introduced a new and uninteresting character we'll never be invested in now.
Suits LA had some bright spots, but unfortunately, the finale was on the weaker side. With the final plot centering on a new character, and other issues being overplayed or underplayed, it just didn't work. There is nothing to make this episode stand out; the show started on such a weak note and confusingly reversed all the progress it's made since the beginning, leaving us wondering why. Suits LA had potential, but for several reasons, it was squandered.
