The main characters of the Suits spinoff Suits: LA has been arriving quickly as the series' release date approaches, giving audiences who loved Suits insight into what the spinoff will offer. While it seems like quite a bit will be carried over from the original show, one large aspect seems to have already been changed, allowing Suits: LA to begin a fresh journey.

The cast of Suits: LA sat down with Suits cast, allowing the spinoff the chance to honor that legacy while also going in a new direction with its leads.

Suits LA Has Four Lead Characters Instead Of Just Two

Suits Season 1 Really Only Focused On Harvey And Mike

Suits: LA will feature four main characters over two, building the larger group dynamics earlier than the original show. We already know a few things about Suits: LA's lead characters, such as Ted Black's (Stephen Amell) ambition, and how it affects his interactions with the wider cast. Some of those characterizations will be familiar to audiences who loved the original, but everything revealed about the spinoff so far audiences will see those complex interactions fairly early with these four leads. Suits: LA's expanded ensemble contrasts Suits, which waited until after the first season to begin building on the larger cast.

Suits' best characters were from the series' ensemble, including Jessica Pearson (Gina Torres), Louis Litt (Rick Hoffman), and Rachel Zane (Meghan Markle). However, season 1 did not really explore the other characters in the same way as it did Harvey (Gabriel Macht) and Mike (Patrick J. Adams). Harvey and Mike's relationship was the heart of the series, with Suits only digging into the arcs of other characters later on. By focusing on a group from the beginning, Suits: LA is not only giving itself a distinct identity but also avoiding an issue from the original show.

Suits LA Is Right In Not Trying To Emulate Suits’ Mike And Harvey Dynamic

Focusing On Just One Character Dynamic Would Limit Suits: LA's Story

Suits: LA's approach allows them to avoid copying the original's main character dynamics, allowing the ensemble more time to grow throughout the season. Though Mike and Harvey's interactions and journey as friends were fascinating, they also caused the series to neglect other characters, making their overall arcs feel rushed in certain places. As a result, some of the arcs of the original show were not as intriguing to audiences, as characters like Jessica and Donna were given little time to grow and become as complex as the main duo.

Having four leads allows the spinoff to avoid this, as the show will be able to divide its focus more evenly among its ensemble. Each episode will need to showcase all of these characters in some capacity, with audiences getting new insights into their arcs every time. The characters can then be given more time to grow organically, adding more nuance to each one and their dynamics with the others earlier. This would allow Suits: LA to stand out more as its story unfolds, letting all of its characters breathe and grow together over stemming from one source.
