Warning: SPOILERS for Suits LA season 1, episode 13.The series finale of Suits LA’s cancellation. As a result, the Suits LA season 1 finale was suddenly the series finale as well.

Speculation around why Suits LA failed runs amok, but there was no single reason to cancel the freshman spinoff. The ensemble cast— Stephen Amell (Ted Black), Lex Scott Davis (Erica Rollins), Josh McDermitt (Stuart Lane), Bryan Greenberg (Rick Dodsen), Rachelle Goulding (Samantha Railsback), Maggie Grace (Amanda Stevens), Alice Lee (Leah Power), and Azita Ghanizada (Roslyn)— did their best to make Suits LA a success. Though the fate of the spinoff was out of the cast’s control, the finale left many of their characters’ fates uncertain.

8 Will Ted End Up With Samantha Or Amanda?

The Love Triangle Was Set Up But Never Explored

While many talented actors were portraying Suits LA’s cast of characters, Amell’s Ted Black was undoubtedly the main character. The spinoff injected flashbacks from his past into every episode, and even when Ted acted more like an antagonist, the series begged viewers to sympathize with him. Suits LA made Ted a charmer, implying he was suave enough to quickly disarm and attract women within minutes of meeting them.

By the end of Suits LA, Ted’s ex, Samantha, and his head of criminal law, Amanda, are inexplicably drawn to him and interested in exploring their feelings. This quasi-love triangle leaves Ted at a crossroads: he and Samantha have history, but Amanda is a new and exciting option. Suits LA will never be able to flesh out their storyline, meaning it's unclear who Ted would have chosen in the end.

7 Will Ted, Stuart, & Samantha’s Merger Be Successful?

Their First Try Was A Disaster

One of the biggest developments in the Suits LA series finale was Stuart asking Ted to merge with his and Samantha’s law firm. It’s a direct inverse of Suits LA episode 1’s betrayal, where Ted was slated to merge with them before Stuart cut him out of the deal. The best friends reconciled throughout the spinoff’s single season, but it’s still unclear if they will be successful business partners again.

Ted’s thin character development in Suits LA is cause for concern. Aside from how complicated it would be to have Samantha, Amanda, and Ted working together, there’s no guarantee Ted won’t backslide into the same bad habits that sent Stuart spiraling in the past. Even after all they’ve gone through in Suits LA, Ted could easily liken himself and Stuart to the lion and the flea again.

6 Did Leah Really Give Up Her Dream Of Being A Screenwriter?

Rick Said She Had Potential

Alice Lee as Leah Power in Suits LA episode 1

One of the best characters in Suits LA was Leah, Erica’s whimsical associate. However, the spinoff introduced a personal conflict for Leah early on: though she worked in entertainment law, she always dreamed of being a screenwriter. After anonymously handing over writing samples to Rick, Leah receives a tough love talk from Roslyn and gives up. Her decision is understandable, as Rick initially tells her the scripts are terrible. Yet, he changes his tune later on.

Why Doesn't Victoria Justice Play Herself In Suits LA?

Suits LA's setting means it can have actors appear as themselves, but that was not the case for Victoria Justice, who plays an all-new character.

In the penultimate episode of Suits LA, Dylan Pryor (Victoria Justice) returns and asks Rick to get her a role in her dream movie. When things look bleak, Rick revisits Leah’s scripts and calls to say he could get it adapted. Leah comes clean and says she’s the writer but, against Rick’s counsel, has committed to being a lawyer. While it would’ve been a nice foundation for Leah’s future at the spinoff’s core firm, the storyline felt too quick for Leah to give up her lifelong dream.

5 Will Rick & Erica’s Relationship Last?

One Kiss Doesn't Fix Everything

Since the beginning, twist in Suits LA episode 1, however, Rick goes to work for Stuart and Samantha, leaving Erica to be head of entertainment law at Ted’s firm. Even after the split, Erica and Rick often interacted with lots of flirty undertones.

Suits LA subtly mentions the two sharing a romantic past, but their relationship ended when Rick wanted more than Erica was ready to give. The same thing happens in the present, leading to a last-minute conflict between the rivals. In the Suits LA finale, after Dylan acts as a plot device to bring the warring lawyers together, Erica and Rick share a spontaneous kiss. Despite the heated scene, there’s no telling if Erica is truly ready for a real relationship or if she was acting on impulse.

4 Is Stuart Still Scared Of David Bowie?

His Threats Loom Even If He's Gone

Josh McDermitt as Stuart Lane in Suits LA

The Hollywood “fixer” David Bowie (Maury Sterling) was first introduced in Suits LA episode 7, and his case plagued Stuart until episode 10. Originally merely charged with threatening someone by blowing up their car, Bowie’s case quickly becomes complicated as a whistleblower slated to testify against him is suddenly murdered. Stuart helps acquit him of the charge before realizing that Bowie used doctored footage as an alibi for the murder.

“Go Home And Get Your Shinebox”: Suits LA Episode 9’s Goodfellas Reference Teases Why Stuart Needs To Be More Wary Of Its New Villain

Suits LA just included a reference to Goodfellas that might easily be hinting that the show’s newest villain is a force to be reckoned with.

Bowie threatens Stuart and his family to keep quiet, but Ted arrives in time to blackmail Bowie into leaving. The exchange rattled Stuart enough to drive him mad in Suits LA episode 11, leading Ted to book an anger management retreat for his best friend. The plot led to Rick Hoffman’s return as Louis Litt in Suits LA episode 12, but the heart-to-heart between him and Stuart can’t solve such a complicated issue in one fell swoop.

3 Is Avery Jeffers Really A One-Time Villain?

Suits LA Propped Him Up As A Powerhouse

Mike O'Malley as Avery Jeffers in Suits LA episode 13.

The main antagonist of Suits LA episode 13 was said to be so dangerous, Samantha calls him the closest thing Hollywood has to a mob boss. The severity of the case is what draws Ted in as co-counsel, but Avery Jeffers (Mike O’Malley) proves to be more of a nuisance than a villain in the series finale. Jeffers was a high-profile producer with serious complaints filed against him, but silenced, indicating the immense power he had.

While Jeffers does catch Ted and Samantha on a few technicalities, it isn’t long before the pair bring in reinforcements— criminal prosecutor Elizabeth Smith (Sofia Pernas)— to take him down. The confrontation is simple, quick, and binding. After Smith threatens his reputation, Avery Jeffers signs a plea deal and resigns from his job. It’s a fine conclusion to the case, but Suits LA either blew Avery Jeffers out of proportion or had plans for him to return with a vengeance.

2 What Other Original Suits Cast Would Have Appeared?

The Spinoff Already Had Some Heavy Hitters

Following Louis Litt’s appearance and the three-episode arc involving Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht), it was unclear which original characters would return in Suits LA. While some, like Rachel Zane (Meghan, Duchess of Sussex), were borderline impossible, many recognizable characters from Suits could have made a grand return. The most iconic characters, like Jessica Pearson (Gina Torres) or Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams), would have been obvious choices, but there were more subtle options as well.

Many characters ed Suits in the later seasons but had a big impact, like Dule Hill’s Alex Williams or Katherine Heigl’s Samantha Wheeler. Yet, there are many more options beyond lawyers that Suits LA could have brought back. Past friends and lovers could have had brief appearances, or former associates from the early seasons could have popped in for a quick cameo. Due to being on opposite coasts, Suits LA can’t get away with unexplained appearances, but the nostalgia factor could have earned the spinoff a lot of slack.

1 What Was Suits LA Season 2 Going To Be About?

Ted Would Likely Still Be Center-Stage

Stephen Amell as Ted Black in Suits LA

While the ending of Suits LA implied major plots for a hypothetical season 2, there’s no guarantee what the spinoff would’ve done with the narrative momentum it had. Based on the finale, it seemed like Suits LA would likely follow the conflicts resulting from Ted merging with Stuart and Samantha. Romantic tension would be at an all-time high for many characters, and storylines like Leah’s career uncertainty would probably be replaced by flashier guest stars, high-octane cases, and dramatic twists and turns.

One of the main issues with Suits LA was its inconsistent tone, which makes predicting what season 2 would have followed more difficult. Ted’s invasive flashback sequences were an eyesore, but it was an ongoing storyline that appeared in every episode. The Suits LA finale seemed to wrap up Ted’s business in New York, so it’s unclear what, if anything, would have replaced the flashbacks. Unfortunately, Suits LA season 2 will never be able to answer that question (among many others).
