Suits LA, this is not the first time Aaron Korsh’s legal drama leads into a new series. Starring Gina Torres as her Suits character Jessica Pearson, Pearson began to be developed around the same time as Suits season 7 and premiered a few months before season 9 concluded.

However, not only couldn’t Pearson match Suits’ popularity, but the spinoff lasted much less than its parent series at only 10 episodes. Pearson’s cancellation was disappointing considering how great of a character Gina Torres’ Jessica was, yet the show made some mistakes that could have been avoided. Fortunately, Suits LA is avoiding these mistakes and has the potential to be the long-running Suits spinoff that Pearson couldn’t be.

Suits LA Feels A Lot More Like The Original Show Than Pearson Did

Speaking to EW about Suits LA, series creator Aaron Korsh, who was also behind Suits and Pearson, commented on the mistakes that were made with the franchise’s first spinoff. According to Korsh, Pearson didn’t embrace the similarities with the original show, which was “a conscious decision” that did not pay off. Pearson was meant to be different from Suits, with Jessica’s show being more of a political drama instead of a legal procedural. However, as Korsh noted, Suits fans were not ready for that shift in tone.

Suits season 7, episode 16, "Good-Bye" served as a backdoor pilot for Pearson.

Korsh described Pearson as “darker” than Suits and “not as funny,” which made it a tough sell for fans of the original show. Suits LA, on the other hand, is trying to recapture what made Suits so great. From the structure of the show – powerhouse attorneys working on a major firm while dealing with personal and professional challenges – to actually being a legal drama, Suits LA feels way more like Suits than Pearson ever did.

Suits LA Must Still Do More Than Repeat The Original Show

Suits LA Must Have Its Own Identity

While Suits LA being more like Suits is good news, especially considering that it’s been more than five years since the now streaming sensation finished its original run, the new spinoff series must do more than repeat the original show. Characters like Harvey Specter and Mike Ross are incredibly popular, and while it will be fun to see Harvey in Suits LA, the spinoff must have more to offer than that.

Gabriel Macht is officially playing Harvey Specter again in Suits: L.A., with his return all but confirming a popular theory about the new spinoff.

Suits had a very particular dynamic built on the fact that Harvey and Mike were extraordinary characters in the very sense of the word. The dynamic between Suits’ main characters is also incredibly difficult to replicate, as it developed naturally over nine seasons. Suits’ sharp humor and fast dialogue are elements that Suits LA should include, but the new series must find its own identity and let the new characters shine.
