To address complications caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Games Done Quick is moving entirely online for Summer Games Done Quick 2020, which starts this weekend. GDQ is a semiannual video game speedrunning marathon done for charity. It was originally held in 2010.

Games Done Quick has traditionally hosted two events every year. Awesome Games Done Quick, which is held in early January, raises money for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. Summer Games Done Quick takes place usually in late June or early July and s Doctors Without Borders. The Awesome Games Done Quick marathon that took place this January set the current record for money raised at a GDQ event, coming in at $3,164,002. Unsurprisingly, SGDQ did not take place in June as was originally scheduled. The charity did hold a special event in April, however, to raise money for COVID-19 .

GDQ is just one of the many entertainment events that has been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The disease caused several movies and TV shows to pause filming and led to the cancellation of several major sporting events and of large conventions like E3, which was not held for the first time since its inception. Even now, several months after the initial quarantine rules were put in effect, entertainers are only just beginning to pick up the pieces of what times were like before the crisis. Some have found bizarre and imaginative new solutions to living with the pandemic, like Animal Crossing: New Horizons, while others have simply begun filming again, very carefully, and sometimes with disastrous results. It is, incidentally, a very appropriate time to organizations like Doctors Without Borders, which is still the beneficiary of Summer Games Done Quick 2020.

These are difficult times, and it might be a long while before they get any better. Adaptation is very important to persevering in the world of COVID-19, and the people behind Games Done Quick are doing an excellent job. Even though SGDQ 2020 is going to look a lot different from what fans have come to expect from the event, it's heartening to see that the charity stream won't be cancelled outright. In dark times like these, everyone could use a little entertainment, and Games Done Quick is a very good way to get some for a great cause.
