An epic new Sunfire cosplay honors this vastly underrated member of the X-Men. Sunfire occupies a unique place in mutant history, beginning as a foe before becoming a charter member of the “new X-Men.” Over the years, Sunfire has come and gone with the X-Men — which may explain why he does not enjoy the same level of popularity as Nightcrawler or Wolverine.

Still, a stunning cosplay honors this unsung mutant. Across a series of nine photos, cosplayer climbingcomics452 unveiled the shoot. To help promote this year’s Hellfire Gala, Marvel held a "real" gala at San Deigo Comic-Con 2023, and climbingcomics452’s shoot is set there. The shoot opens with a solo shot of Sunfire, dressed in ceremonial garb; practical effects are used to help him create fire, and his eyes glow with energy.

Sunfire s Magneto, also decked out in a Hellfire outfit, in the second photo. He poses with Emma Frost, Storm, Nightcrawler, Wolverine and Professor X in the following photos. The shoot concludes with a group shot of Sunfire, Magneto (from the previous photo) and Destiny before ending with another solo shot. Fans have reacted enthusiastically to the shoot, giving it nearly 100 likes and appreciative comments.

Sunfire Never Caught On Like His X-Men Teammates

Sunfire X-Men

Although Sunfire is most associated with the "new" X-Men who debuted in Giant Size X-Men #1, he actually appeared five years before in X-Men #64 by Roy Thomas, Don Heck, Tom Palmer, and Artie Simek. Born Shiro Yoshida, Sunfire’s parents were present at the bombing of Hiroshima, which caused their son to be born with the mutant power to control solar radiation. Initially a villain, Sunfire has always been on uneasy with the X-Men, even when he fights alongside them. Sunfire is arrogant and proud, and this temperament does not make him easy to team up with, despite his great power.

Now, climbingcomics452 shows just how awesome this underrated mutant is. Unveiling the Sunfire cosplay at the real Hellfire Gala was a stroke of genius. A massive party, the Hellfire Gala is typically a reason for Earth’s mutants to dress to the nines for a night of revelry and mayhem. While Sunfire’s red and white outfit with a dragon mask is his best-known look, he has in fact had others. While any of them would have made for great cosplay, leaning into a Hellfire Gala interpretation of the character sets it apart from the rest of the pack. Climbingcomics452’s cosplay shows not only Sunfire’s powers, but also demonstrates the character’s swagger and attitude.

And while Sunfire’s attitude does not make him much of a team player, it translates well into cosplay. Climbingcomics452’s understands Sunfire’s appeal and captures it perfectly; the practical effects, used to create authentic-looking flames, are a nice touch as well. Sunfire is an underrated member of the X-Men, and he's due his time in the spotlight. But, until then, this epic cosplay honors his great power and haughty attitude.
