Here are 15 predictions of the films and franchises expected to air trailers during the broadcast of Super Bowl LVII. This year's Super Bowl broadcast occurs on Sunday, February 12, 2023. As per decades of audience expectations, the Super Bowl has become a major opportunity for studios to debut trailers for the year's most anticipated films in front of the year's largest TV viewership.
Due to the reliably massive audience, having a spot during the Super Bowl has always been highly coveted (and extremely expensive) for studios. This year, it is estimated that a 30-second spot during the Super Bowl will cost $7 million (via Forbes). With that in mind, here are the top 15 predictions of which highly anticipated movies are expected to have a trailer spot during the Super Bowl.
1 Marvel Cinematic Universe, Phase 5
Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe kicks off with the release of Agatha: Coven of Chaos.
2 Creed III
Creed III is the first of the series shot for IMAX and the directorial debut for Michael B. Jordan. The film is also Amazon's first big release after its acquisition of MGM, so a spot for the movie during the Super Bowl is almost inevitable and an all-around safe prediction.
3 DCU 2023 Slate
Similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it can be expected that the Super Bowl will feature a sizzle reel of the DCU films expected in 2023, including DCU character expected to continue in their current form after 2023.
4 65
The Adam Driver-starring science fiction thriller 65 is set to be released on March 17. The trailer for the film released in December 2022 already revealed the "Jurassic Park meets Planet of the Apes" twist that sees Driver's astronaut protagonist crash-landing on a prehistoric Earth. As such, a Super Bowl spot can build on this premise to help stoke the hype for this otherwise mysterious film a month before its release.
5 John Wick: Chapter 4
Keanu Reeves' titular assassin returns for a fourth go-around when John Wick: Chapter 4 releases on March 24. A potential Super Bowl spot will likely highlight the action scenes in the film, as per audience's expectations for this stunningly choreographed movie series. Other than that, the fourth John Wick film probably doesn't need that much more marketing in the final month leading to its release, considering the success of the franchise's previous entries.
6 The Super Mario Bros. Movie
Illumination seems prepared to help Nintendo erase all memories of the now 30-year-old live-action film when full extent of Chris Pratt's voice for Mario, opting only to include brief phrases. Perhaps a Super Bowl spot will be the chance to fully show off Pratt's Mario voice, thereby either quelling (or confirming) fans' concern that the iconic character is being misrepresented.
7 Fast X
Fast X is close to the top of the list of all possible trailers to debut during the Super Bowl, given the franchise's history with brash, over-the-top marketing. This is, of course, the tenth and penultimate film of the Fast and Furious Saga. With Fast X set to release on May 19, a high-profile spot during the big game can help kickstart the hype campaign for the film.
8 The Little Mermaid
Out of the live-action remakes of Disney animated classics, casting of black actress Halle Bailey as Ariel. Following the teaser's initial debut at the D23 Expo last fall, the Super Bowl can debut an expanded trailer for the film ahead of its May 26 release date. The Super Bowl spot can provide the first looks at Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, and Javier Bardem as King Triton.
9 Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
The Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was arguably the most successful of Sony's recent efforts at representing Spider-Man outside the MCU. This makes Spider-Verse 2's villain, The Spot.
10 Transformers: Rise of the Beasts
Based on the popular Beast Wars toy line (and subsequent cartoon), Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, opening on June 9, continues the post-Michael Bay revitalization of the franchise that began with 2018's Bumblebee. A Super Bowl spot can further establish how the Maximals, Predacons and Terrorcons will fit in with the Autobots. A Super Bowl trailer can also emphasize the film's 1994 time frame, making it more of a sequel to Bumblebee than Michael Bay's films.
