This year's Mario anniversary celebrations include the remastered Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury and the recently released new animated Mario movie in 2022, which it hopes will perform better than the previous attempt to bring its most iconic character to the silver screen. Amid all this excitement, it could be easy to forget about Super Mario 35, a competitive Tetris 99-like title that was announced at the same time as Super Mario 3D All-Stars.
Earlier today, Nintendo announced that Super Mario 35 is now available to on the Nintendo Switch free of charge, although doing so requires a Nintendo Switch Online hip. Nintendo’s webpage describes the game as “Super Mario Bros. with a 35-player twist,” as players race against each other in classic Mario stages while trying to attack opponents with the series' iconic shells and power-ups from the 1985 original. In addition to the main competition, there will also be daily challenges that players can complete to earn in-game coins (which are used to earn power-ups) and special battles where bonus conditions (like starting a round with 100 coins) can be added to the festivities.
Fans have reacted to the idea of a Super Mario battle royale experience with interest and excitement, although this optimism has been tempered by the fact that both Super Mario 35 and Super Mario 3D All-Stars will only be August sales record for game consoles in the United States a few months ago.
With that in mind, and the 35th anniversary of the mustachioed Nintendo mascot in full swing, Super Mario 35 seems like a fun time for fans looking to test their Mario skills against other players online in fast-paced online competition, especially since it’s available for free.
