Warning! Spoilers ahead for The Super Mario Bros. Movie

As the WGA strike continues, Chris Pratt addresses the status of The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2. Based on the beloved Nintendo video game franchise, The Super Mario Bros. Movie hit theaters this April, earning mixed reviews but becoming a major box office juggernaut. The movie recently sured $1.3 billion globally, beating Frozen to become the second highest-grossing animated movie of all time, thus making a sequel seem incredibly likely.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 has not yet gotten an official green light, though, and Pratt now reveals in a recent interview with ET that news regarding a sequel will probably be hard to come by until after the writers' strike has ended. While no progress on a sequel is happening at the moment, Pratt does express his gratitude to fans for making the first film such an overwhelming success. Check out the actor's full comment below:

"We're in the midst of this writers' strike, and so everything has been paused and [put] on hold for the right reasons. I really do the WGA and our writers. When the negotiations have been completed, and the writers feel comfortable moving forward, then it'll be time to start talking about what's next for that.

"We're so grateful for the , though. It’s] really shocking to me how successful that movie's been. I mean, I expected that people would love it the way I was excited about it, but it's truly multigenerational around the world. People love it. They love Mario... It's a really fun, funny, cute, heartwarming movie and, God, I can't believe I'm part of it."

What The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 Could Be About

The Super Mario Bros. Movie's ending certainly leaves the door open for another story, with Mario (Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) setting off on another adventure after defeating Bowser. Bowser, made tiny by a power-up, is left imprisoned in a small cage and his post-credits scene in the film sees him singing about getting his revenge. Although the villain remains firmly behind bars when the movie ends, it's clear that he's not ready to give up just yet.

In addition to Bowser wanting revenge, the second Super Mario Bros. Movie post-credits scene teases the arrival of an exciting new character. The scene, which takes place in the sewers of Brooklyn, features an egg hatching, hyping the arrival of Yoshi, a fan-favorite character from the Nintendo video games. If Bowser does end up escaping his cage in The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2, it looks like Yoshi could be ing forces with Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach to attempt to defeat him once more.

Even if a sequel doesn't directly incorporate too many elements from the first film, there are decades' worth of franchise lore and games that it could draw from. From characters to storylines to locations, there's still a wealth of material to potentially explore. It remains to be seen when the WGA strike will end but, when it does, it certainly seems like work on The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 will be a top priority.
