New footage of early builds of games such as Wii Sports, Wii Play, and several other games were available to play on the convention's floor. Nintendo initially revealed the Wii under the codename "Revolution" the year prior, but 2006 marked the true first look at Nintendo's best-selling home console in its history so far.
In 2020, Nintendo gave Super Mario Galaxy some love in September with the extra content in the form of Bowser's Fury.
Now, as reported by Final Fantasy 3. These videos come from Project Star World on YouTube, where they've created a playlist of 32 videos from E3 2006. Twitter Forest of Illusion shared that playlist with their Twitter followers, and the total runtime is a whopping one hour. Most prominently, an early demo of Super Mario Galaxy showcases unseen gameplay, including a planet that went unused in the final game.
These videos are fascinating to watch because it gives players a glimpse into the process behind some popular Wii titles. Super Mario Galaxy's footage is interesting to watch in particular because it's visible just how much ended up changing before the game's final release in 2007. The game's Toad characters have exclamation marks above their heads when they want to talk, and the overall UI display is much different than what Nintendo ultimately included.
It's also fun to see which of the individual planets from the demo ended up in their own, respective galaxies. For instance, one of the planets went on to become the starting area of Good Egg Galaxy, but this demo version is in a noticeably early form. Several areas from Space Junk Galaxy are also shown off, such as the boss Tarantox. However, this previously unseen Super Mario Galaxy footage also puts into perspective how relatively intact Nintendo's vision remained a year out from launch, and many collectors and enthusiasts will likely want to get their hands on playable versions of the demos shown in these videos for years to come.
