and imaginative level design that saw Mario hopping across one spherical planetoid after another in a quest to rescue Princess Peach from the evil Bowser once again.

Unsurprisingly, Super Mario Galaxy has gone down in history as one of didn’t make the transition.

Now, one group of fans is taking Super Mario Galaxy to a different handheld, multi-screen Nintendo platform. That's right, this time it's coming to the late, great Nintendo DS. As reported by NintendoLife.com, a four-person mod team simply known as Jesse is working toward making a faithful port of Super Mario Galaxy for the DS as a ion project. They have been at this for the past few months, and have already posted a video of Hurry Scurry Galaxy’s “Shrinking Satellite” level in action. As can be seen in the YouTube clip below, the game’s graphics and sound design have been scaled down to the DS’s reduced capabilities, but all of the Super Mario Galaxy platforming players love is present and ed for as Mario runs across shrinking platforms and collects musical notes on his way to collect the ever-elusive Star.

Fan-based mods and remakes are nothing new in the world of video games, Super Mario Galaxy included. For example, one talented fan created Super Smash Bros Brawl.

Back in the present, this fan-made DS build of Super Mario Galaxy already looks impressive, capturing the intergalactic scope and planet-hopping gameplay of Mario’s 2007 adventure while accommodating the DS’s hardware limitations. It probably won’t end up as much more than a fun fan project, especially given Nintendo’s increasingly rabid copyright enforcement over the past year or so, but it’s still fun to see in action and a neat display of fan ion and talent.
