Comics artist Sarah Leuver (@comickergirl) has reimagined DC Comics should incorporate the retro look.

Throughout her comic book history, Supergirl has endured a series of changes, with many variations relating to her alter ego, costume, and backstory. While Kara Danvers has become the quintessential version of the character in the DC Universe, her look has evolved with the times. Initially wearing a suit that resembled Supergirl's costume incorporates all-tights, with a suit design that branches off from the Man of Steel’s traditional uniform.

Artist and fan Sarah Leuver revealed a new but familiar look for Supergirl on past of the Superman mythos, while remixing it with the future in mind.

In 2020, DC Comics artist Stephen Byrne considered the alternate look for Supergirl in fan art he shared online, inspired by Leuver’s initial concept. Since she has gotten the publisher’s attention, it’s possible the 90s look could eventually pop up in comics. In response to the tweet, some fans pointed out that Supergirl had worn the costume in the past in the form of “Hypertime Supergirl,” a product of the DC Multiverse.

Leuver’s tweet also earned the of followers who similarly voiced that the throwback look outshines her other costumes. Unlike many other suits she has worn, Superboy’s suit isn’t revealing of her legs. Instead, it emphasizes her sense of style as a callback to fashion from the 90s. In contrast to her original costume which was largely a female edition of Superman’s suit, this one feels more true to her personality. Superboy also started out in comics essentially wearing the Man of Steel’s suit, but with time evolved with a much cooler design. DC should take a note from Sarah Leuver and the popularity of her Supergirl fan art.
