With the Summer of Superman comic initiative soon to be in full swing and James Gunn’s Supergirl films on the horizon, it’s clear that DC is ushering in a new Era of the Supers. And as if the excitement wasn’t already sky-high, Kara Zor-El is set to headline a brand-new comic series this spring—along with a stunning new look to match.
On May 14, 2025, fans can dive into Kara Zor-El’s latest adventure with writer and illustrator Sophie Campbell’s Supergirl #1. This new series s the lineup of Summer of Superman titles, marking Kara’s first solo book within the DC ALL IN initiative.
According to DC’s official solicitation, Campbell is taking the Maiden of Might in a fresh direction—bringing her back to her hometown of Midvale. But after so many years away, this homecoming won’t be without its challenges—especially since someone else has already stepped up as Supergirl, protecting the town and saving the day.

Campbell’s series is already shaping up to be an exciting and dynamic adventure, as the solicitation teases that Supergirl must uncover the identity of this imposter and stop them before they take over her life. Adding to the anticipation, Campbell shared some of the key inspirations behind her take on Kara Zor-El. She cited the wild costumes and stories of the ’70s, the Supergirl movie from 1984, and the CW Supergirl series as her main touchstones. “In creating this version of Supergirl, I’ll be drawing on some of those influences as the series unfolds,” she explained.
Elevating the excitement even further is Kara’s brand-new Supergirl costume, teased across the various cover artworks released for the series. Leading the charge on the design is bestselling cover artist Stanley “Artgerm” Lau, whose stunning artwork captures a fresh yet recognizable take on the character. Lau described his redesign as “sporty and fun, but packs a punch.” While the new look preserves core elements of Kara’s classic costume, one notable change is the dynamic reimagining of her chest emblem, which bears a resemblance to the Superman: Legacy suit worn by David Corenswet in the film.

With the Summer of Superman—a celebration of the Man of Steel and the Super-Family—just around the corner and James Gunn’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow set to hit theaters in summer 2026, the timing of this new Supergirl series couldn’t be more perfect. Not only will it fuel excitement for the film, but it will also help tide over eager fans anxiously awaiting its release. What makes this Supergirl series even more intriguing is how Campbell’s take on Kara will compare to Tom King’s, given that he helmed her last major run, which is serving as the inspiration for Gunn's movie.
