Supergirl's next love story in the comics is about to begin, however, it's not one readers might expect. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow kicked off with an explosive first issue that saw Supergirl introduced to a young alien named Ruthye. Supergirl had been celebrating her twenty-first birthday on another planet, away from Earth's yellow sun so she could get drunk. Here, Supergirl's heroic instincts kick in, even while completely wasted. Supergirl beats up an assailant who stole Ruthye's prized sword, thus starting their journey together.
At first, Supergirl is very resistant to Ruthye due to her request to kill her father's murder Krem. However, as Supergirl was about to leave and return to Earth, both she and Ruthye were attacked. Krem's surprise assault was a deadly one, despite Supergirl scaring Krem off at the end. Still, Krypto the Superdog is killed. His death sets Supergirl off on her next adventure as she vows to do anything to take down Krem, including traveling for months on a cosmic bus.
In an interview with SyFy Wire, writer Tom King reveals Supergirl's next steps. Supergirl has taken on Ruthye's request to hunt Krem, no matter what it takes. This leads Supergirl, who is shipless, to a space bus stop where she awaits her and Ruthye's long-haul bus journey across space. Their destination remains unknown, but one thing that's for sure is that Krem is hiding out there. And this time, Supergirl won't be so forgiving as it looks like she may break her and Superman's biggest rule, to not kill. But on their bus ride, King teases a love story will begin, but not in a conventional way.
King said that, "in a lot of ways, this is a love story. Not a romantic love story, but a love story between these two characters, Kara and Ruthye, and this is the beginning." It has been clear since the first details were announced for the series that Ruthye and Supergirl would strike up a friendship. It's exciting to see King refer to it as a love story, in that, specifically, Ruthye ires Supergirl so much that she basically falls head over heels for her. Previews highlight Ruthye's pure and endless iration for Supergirl, but for now, Ruthye is just a companion who has the same mission.
Rounding out his explanation about Supergirl and Ruthye's relationship, King explained where the two-month-long bus ride 'romance' drew inspiration from. He claims that he took a lot of it from Frank Capra's 1934 film It Happened One Night, which features two strangers meeting on a bus. It's quite an obvious reference, but it's great to see King coming out and teasing his inspirations as his thoughts may validate some fans' reactions when they read Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #2 when it's released July 20.
