The Supergirl series has offered up many memorable and emotional moments since its debut that are unlikely to ever be forgotten by the characters and in the wider Arrowverse. These characters have been through a great deal since they were first introduced to audiences.
Over time, the characters have had to evolve, with a few deaths and departures along the way. There are also some who have seen huge emotional implications to their decisions. Here are 10 scenes and moments from the series that will never fail to pull at our heartstrings.
JIMMY LEAVING
Jimmy Olsen has been a key member of the team since the series first started. First as a reporter, then as the leader of Cat Co, before finally moving into the role as the superhero Guardian. He's heroic, talented and one of the best characters of the show.
However, all good things must come to an end and James was struggling to find his place in this new company he was once a major part of. James makes the decision to leave, changing his name to Jimmy and going back to grassroots reporting.
MON-EL'S EXILE
Saving the world sometimes means that difficult decisions must be made. Supergirl has done some pretty powerful things, but nothing was stronger than knowing your decision is about to mean you must exile your loving boyfriend in order to protect the planet.
This is exactly what happened when the atmosphere was filled with lead, causing Mon-El to retreat, eventually into the future. On his return he brought a wife with him that broke Kara's heart even more. Both these scenes are especially emotional moments of the show.
WINN TO THE FUTURE
Winn has been a fundamental character over the course of the show. He was the first person to find out about Kara's alter ego and has played a pivotal role in stopping many different alien criminals, with his tech expertise and costume making abilities.
Unfortunately, the future beckoned to Winn, who wanted to explore everything that was on offer to him in a different time. He travelled to the future with Mon-El and hasn't been seen since. His departure was a deeply painful one, although he may return someday.
LOCKWOOD'S HATRED
Lockwood became one of the main villains of any season of Supergirl due to the hatred he has for alien species. The right wing politician and terrorist successfully created a group of criminals that sought to rid the world of alien life.
Every scene that Lockwood incited hatred or killed in order to achieve some greater purpose, filled us with hatred and emotion. It was heartbreaking to see the destruction he caused and it was jubilant to see him finally get the justice that he deserved.
ALEX AND MAGGIE BREAK UP
Alex and Maggie were one of the strongest couples of the series. Maggie was a huge part of Alex's journey in understanding who she really was. However, Alex wanted a number of things that Maggie just wasn't prepared for.
Alex's biggest concern was of raising a family. She deeply wanted children and Maggie never wanted to take on that responsibility. They ultimately had to part ways in a moment that was so inspirational yet so hard to watch; at least Alex stuck to what she really wants.
REUNION WITH MOTHER
Much like the story of Clark Kent, Kara Zor-El also lost her family when Krypton exploded. She too was sent from the planet in a space shuttle and landed on Earth. However, she arrived a bit later than Clark, meaning she aged much slower than him.
Despite believing all her family was dead, it was revealed that her mother was actually still alive. Their reunion was a huge moment for the show and it got us all a little teary-eyed. Her mother now lives on a part of Krypton that still survives.
WINN AND HIS FATHER
Winn has had a pretty troubled childhood brought on by the fact that his father is a master criminal. Known as the Toyman, this villain has wreaked havoc across the United States and has sought to try to reunite with his son, or perhaps exact revenge upon him.
Their relationship is incredibly complicated but the first time that the two came face to face again it was clear that Winn was extremely hurt to see his father. He wants nothing to do with that part of his family and it was heartbreaking to watch him struggle with this.
DEATH OF M'YRNN J'ONNZ
Once Martian Manhunter had learned that his father was actually still alive, he could live his life knowing that he finally wasn't alone. However, his father suffered from a severe mental disease which caused his memories to slowly become forgotten.
As he reached the point of his death he sacrificed himself to save the world. This was a heartbreaking scene as J'onn had only just had his father returned to him before he was pulled away once again in a cruel twist of fate.
REIGN REVEAL
The villain of season 3 of the show was a character from the comics known as Reign. She was dastardly, heartless and wished to create the destruction of the world. However, the true woman behind this mask was nothing like this.
Samantha was just a hard-working woman with a loving daughter. Every time she blacked out she turned into Reign. The scenes that showcased her and her friends realizing the truth about her double life were heart wrenching to watch.
LENA'S BETRAYAL
Kara's secret is one that has only been revealed to a select few. Unfortunately, Lena was never on that list, in part because of her surname. However, in the previous season of Supergirl, she learned that Kara really was the Kryptonian hero.
This caused a great heartache for Lena who believed she could trust her friend. It was shocking that Supergirl revealed her identity to Lena eventually but even more emotional when Lena explained the reasons why she still wanted to betray her former best friend.
