As spin-off about Kara's cousin, Superman and Lois.
Smith, whose love for comic books is well known, was a fan of the show before ing the team as director of four Supergirl episodes, beginning in season two. But while he's also Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, which co-starred Benoist.
As noted by Comicbook.com, Smith spoke out on his podcast, Fatman Beyond, after hearing the bad news. "I loved that show so much - I'll be sad to see it go," the filmmaker lamented. But given that the show's central relationship is between Benoist's Kara Danvers and her sister Alex (Chyler Leigh), Smith indicated he thinks the bulk of the episodes should be directed by women. "There's a world where you get just twenty women directors, and f**k all the dudes for the last season," he said. "But if they're letting a dude in there... Oh to go back to National City." Thinking on his feet, Smith added, "I can make some phone calls."
While he's written, directed, or produced dozens of movies and TV episodes, Smith ed his time on Supergirl as a highlight. "Working on that show was some of the best times I've had in my life, professionally and personally," he confessed. "I'm so glad that show exists. I loved it before I directed on it—[I] just thought, 'God, her relationship with her sister is so beautiful.' ... Such a great show." A lot of those good feelings came from working with star Benoist. "She is such a great person," Smith said. "Honestly, the light of the f***ing world. As a number one on a show, who works literally every day and every scene because you're the titular character, and sometimes they hoist you up on wires because you have to be on a green screen, she always had a smile on her face. She's always wonderful and gracious."
Bringing Kevin Smith back for one last episode would be a great move for Supergirl. His episodes always felt fresh and fun, with a unique point of view clearly born out of love for the characters. Beyond that, it would be a sweet way for the show to honor its legacy—hopefully, the final season will fit in other returns, especially for characters we haven't seen in a while, like Winn (Jeremy Jordan), Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart) or Mon-El (played by Benoist's real-life husband, Chris Wood). While there will be a lot of story to wrap up, a Smith-directed episode could help bring Supergirl full circle—and a Jay and Silent Bob cameo wouldn't be so bad either.
