Warning: This feature contains SPOILERS for the Supergirl season 5 finale.

Last updated: March 8, 2021

Supergirl has been renewed for season 6, which was later confirmed to be its last season. The Arrowverse series' fifth season was cut short due to pandemic-related production shutdowns that began in March 2020. This left the Arrowverse slate with truncated seasons all around. Shortly before the end of season 5, Supergirl star Melissa Benoist announced she and husband Chris Wood were expecting their first child together. The actress' maternity leave delayed her return to Supergirl season 6, which finally began filming in the fall of 2020 without the titular star. The good news is the show finally has a premiere date for its sixth and final season.

The events of Supergirl season 5 saw Kara Danvers and her allies facing a host of new challenges. Chief among them was their hometown of National City being relocated from Earth-38 to the new Earth-Prime during the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths. History on this brave new world was rewritten to make Lex Luthor a hero, rather than an infamous criminal mastermind. In fact, Luthor is now one of the most respected men in the world and owner of the DEO, effectively making him the boss of most of Alex Danvers, Kara, and Brainy.

Despite their differences, Luthor and Supergirl did face a common enemy in the form of Leviathan, a mysterious group backed by immortal aliens who had been manipulating humanity for millennia. As the heroes sought to counter Leviathan and their plans to enslave the populace using a new virtual reality platform, Luthor manipulated Leviathan from behind the scenes, increasing his own power base while seeking an opportunity to bring them down from within. Thankfully, Kara gained one unexpected ally heading into the Season 5 finale: Lena Luthor, who had rejected Kara's friendship earlier in the season when she discovered that Supergirl hadn't trusted her with her secret identity. The penultimate episode of the season (now serving as the season 5 finale) ended with Lena apologizing for her stubbornness and warning Supergirl of what her brother was planning.

Given that Supergirl season 5's original finale had to be rewritten at the last minute, it is almost impossible to predict the big bad heading into season 6. According to actor Jon Cryer, who plays Lex Luthor, parts of the original finale were filmed and used, but whole new scenes were written around them. This, according to Cryer, resulted in an entirely new ending in which "the way my character was thwarted now doesn’t happen anymore. So I was like, ‘Oh, did I not get defeated? Wait a minute, I like this!'" This suggests that Luthor will continue to be a thorn in the side of the Super Friends in Supergirl season 6.

While the main threat of Supergirl season 6 is unknown, it has been confirmed that Arrow's John Diggle (David Ramsey) will be popping into National City at some point during the final season. Ramsey will also be directing the 12th episode of Supergirl season 6, which was co-written by series star Azie Tesfai (who plays Kelly Olsen) and J. Holtham and will be heavily focused on Kelly. Elsewhere, there will likely be some shake-ups with regards to character developments after season 5.

Alex Danvers took up a new role as a masked vigilante in the season 5 finale, which will doubtlessly change her dynamic working alongside her sister in the field in season 6. It also appears that J'onn J'onzz will be restarting a romantic relationship with White Martian resistance leader M'Gann M'orzz. Beyond that, fans can expect to see a reconciled Brainiac-5 and Dreamer, with Lena Luthor likely ing the Super Friends in their next adventure. Whatever the season holds, fans are ready to find out what season 6 of Supergirl will have to offer.
