WARNING: Contains Potential Spoilers for SUPERMAN #19!It's a new era for the Super-Family as Lois Lane officially debuts as SUPERWOMAN, forever changing Superman lore by donning the iconic "S" shield to fight alongside her husband in battles both big and small. While this isn't the first time fans have seen Lois take on the Superwoman mantle, it’s perhaps the most significant, as it features the Post-Crisis Lois Lane of Earth-Prime.

Ahead of its October 23, 2024 release, fans can get a glimpse of Superman #19 by Joshua Williamson, Dan Mora, and Alejandro Sánchez. This issue is a major milestone, not only because it marks Mora’s debut as the ongoing artist, but also because it ushers in a new era for Superman and the Super-Family with Lois Lane’s official debut as Superwoman.
Although the preview doesn’t show Lois in her iconic “S” shield costume yet, it highlights her stepping into the Superwoman role, as she rushes to a Daily Planet broom closet to suit up and tackle the latest crisis in Metropolis.
Lois Lane Makes Her First Earth-Prime, Post-Crisis Debut as Superwoman
Lois Lane's First Appearance as Superwoman Took Place in Action Comics #60 (1943)
As previously mentioned, Lois Lane has a long history with the Superwoman mantle, starting with her debut as the first to assume the title in Action Comics #60 (1943). Over the years, she has taken on the role multiple times, though the extent of her powers has varied. In some cases, she merely adopted the name and costume, while in others, she was fully super-powered. Most of her appearances as Superwoman occurred Pre-Crisis, with Post-Crisis versions coming from alternate Earths, including Earth-3, Earth-2, and Earth-0.
Because of this, fans have yet to see an Earth-Prime, non-evil Superwoman Lois Lane in a main continuity storyline, making her debut a game-changing moment in Superman lore. While details about her superpowered transformation are still unfolding, it’s likely that Lois gained her powers during the events of Absolute Power. When the stolen powers of DC’s metahumans were restored, many heroes got their usual abilities back. However, some, like Barry Allen, remained powerless, while traditionally non-powered characters gained new abilities. Hence, Lois is likely part of the latter group, owing her newfound powers to the fallout of Absolute Power.
Lois Lane's first comic appearance was in Action Comics #1 (June 1938).
Lois Lane's Superwoman Costume Will Soon Get Its In-Narrative Debut
Cover C Card Stock Variant by Carla Cohen for Superman #19 (2024)
While the preview didn’t show Lois in her Superwoman costume, fans can expect the full issue to reveal her suit, as the Daily Planet's Chief Editor was rushing to change following a major explosion in the heart of Metropolis. However, fans already have a good idea of what to expect, as Lois’s costume has been teased for months through cover art. The suit features a sleek design, maintaining Superman’s signature colors of blue, red, and yellow, though Lois’s version has more yellow detailing and less red than her husband’s. Despite these teases, it will still be exciting to see Superwoman’s full costume debut in the issue.
Superman #19 is available October 23, 2024, from DC Comics!
