Despite having to get creative when it comes to using the show's cast, Superman & Lois season 4 has been a thrilling ride. Tyler Hoechlin's Superman died and came back to life, with the show exploring his past through flashbacks when he was away. Season 4 touches on the characters' past quite a bit, as Lex Luthor, its main villain, has been holding a grudge for almost two decades. Now, Superman & Lois' latest episode introduced a major character from DC Comics, and he allowed the show to tap into Clark Kent's past.

Superman & Lois Introduces Jimmy Olsen Via Giving Him A Conflict With Clark

Another Exciting Jimmy Olsen Comes To Live-Action

While the DC series follows a Superman who has been active for decades, it made the decision to move the Kent family from Metropolis to Smallville in its first episode. This made it difficult for Superman & Lois to explore Clark Kent and Lois Lane's life at the Daily Planet. Because of that, Superman's best friend from the comics, Jimmy Olsen, was nowhere to be seen for most of the show. Thankfully, Superman & Lois season 4, episode 7, managed to see the debut of Douglas Smith as Jimmy Olsen.

However, instead of just being friends with Clark, Jimmy has a conflict with him. Trying to get closer to Clark, Jimmy convinces him to the Daily Planet's softball team, which he does. However, after Clark misses a few games to save people as Superman, Jimmy Olsen sees through his excuses. After confronting Clark directly about him being Superman, Hoechlin's character denies it. Clark then chooses not to go to the Daily Planet team's championship final while also not going out as Superman, so his secret is safe, and Jimmy just assumes Clark does not want to be his friend.

Clark Kent's Secret Has Been A Main Point Of The DC Series

In most of his appearances in live-action, animation, comics, and more, Jimmy Olsen is shown to be best friends with Superman. That is why Superman & Lois' change to the character's dynamic with Tyler Hoechlin's Clark Kent is so interesting. While not what is usually done with the character, the decision of the DC series is a great one, as it puts a fresh spin on one of Superman's most important relationships. Jimmy Olsen not being Superman's friend also fits in with Superman & Lois' timeline.

Despite leaving the Daily Planet in season 1, it was weird that Clark and Jimmy did not interact until Superman & Lois' final season. By introducing a past conflict, the show explains why Jimmy Olsen was missing. The reason for the friends falling out is also good, as it makes sense that Jimmy would grow irritated about Clark's excuses. While Clark was only trying to protect his secret and Jimmy from being put in harm's way for being Superman's friend, it is realistic that Jimmy would realize he is being lied to in some form and be mad about it.

Tyler Hoechlin's Man Of Steel Has So Much History

Superman & Lois' most exciting aspect is how the show follows a veteran Man of Steel. This allows the DC series to do things that previous live-action adaptations of the character did not do. Jimmy Olsen's role in the show falls into this. Superman & Lois' final season makes sure to leave the characters on good . After Clark Kent decides to reveal that he is Superman to the whole world, he invites Jimmy to come to Smallville so that they can have an honest conversation about Clark's secret and catch up.

The characters had not talked to each other for years because of their fight over Clark lying about why he was missing the Daily Planet's softball games. Superman & Lois' story setup allows Clark and Jimmy's friendship to become more potent, as the characters finally become good friends after years apart. This showcases how Superman & Lois' unique setup for a live-action Clark Kent story makes the show's dramatic moments pop. Despite budget issues, the DC series managed to sneak in at least one appearance from Jimmy Olsen before it ended, and Superman & Lois gave him a touching story.
