Lex Luthor star Michael Cudlitz reveals Superman & Lois was canceled after only four seasons, bringing a twenty-year era of DC television to an end along with it. Naturally, ideas for future stories had to be scrapped, and several characters didn't get a chance to interact with Tyler Hoechlin's Man of Steel.

In an interview with ScreenRant's Joe Deckelmeier at the "BEING SUPER WITH THE CAST OF SUPERMAN & LOIS" at Fan Expo Philadelphia, Lex Luthor actor Michael Cudlitz revealed that a scrapped Superman & Lois storyline "involved Brainiac." According to Cudlitz, the Superman & Lois team were "definitely" going to explore "the world of Brainiac" in subsequent seasons before the series was canceled. Read Michael Cudlitz's comments below:

ScreenRant: You guys were supposed to go a lot longer. Were there any story elements that were discussed but that the show didn't have time to get to?

Michael Cudlitz: "From what I , it involved Brainiac. They were going to definitely go into the world of Brainiac."

Superman & Lois' Plans To Introduce Brainiac Came Extremely Close To Fruition

Michael Cudlitz's comments about Brainiac suggest Superman & Lois got very close to introducing a new version of the character and a storyline centered around him. Superman & Lois' Brainiac would have likely received a lot of focus for at least one season, or even a whole season devoted entirely to him. Superman & Lois season 4 featured a villainous inventor called Milton, played by Nikolai Witschl. In the comics, one of Brainiac's human husks is Milton Fine, who could have revealed to be Brainiac in disguise in Superman & Lois season 5. As if that weren't enough, Amanda McCoy called Milton a "brainiac".

I Still Can’t Believe Superman & Lois Never Used 1 Superboy Villain Storyline, Despite It Being Seemingly Teased For Years

Superman & Lois not using one story angle seems all the more notable given the way the show appeared to set it up more than once in its run.

Had Superman & Lois gotten a season 5, the series might have slowly transformed Nikolai Witschl's Milton into a more grounded version of Brainiac than his comic book counterpart, similarly to Smallville's more human-oriented approach to the DC villain. Otherwise, Superman & Lois season 5 could have slowly clarified Milton's mysterious motivations before revealing his true identity and appearance. The latter option sounds more fitting for Superman & Lois, as the show used a similar twist with Lex Luthor, Bizarro, and Doomsday's real identities.

Our Take On Michael Cudlitz's Brainiac Comments

Brainiac Contininues A Bad Streak Of Canceled Live-Action Adaptations

One of the biggest problems with Superman's live-action adaptations is that they tend to repeat the same antagonists and overlook many of the Man of Steel's famous rogues. Brainiac, in particular, has never appeared in a live-action DC movie, and his TV adaptations haven't received the same level of prominence as Lex Luthor (Krypton notwithstanding). Brainiac was the main villain in scrapped scripts for Richard Donner's Superman sequels, Kevin Smith and Tim Burton's Superman Reborn, and Bryan Singer's Superman Returns sequel. Man of Steel also dropped some hints at Brainiac, but the DCEU never featured the villain. Superman & Lois' Brainiac s that list.
