Black Adam in Shazam! before he convinced the studio that the two rivals should have their standalone films before clashing on the big screen.
After having the film stuck in development hell for several years, Black Adam is officially hitting theaters this week worldwide as Johnson s the ever-growing DCEU. For several months, Johnson has stressed in countless interviews that one of his big goals with the Black Adam character is to square off with Cavill's Superman eventually. For Johnson, Black Adam is only the beginning of his DCEU journey, as he has implied that he plans to stick around for quite some time. While Cavill hasn't suited up as Superman since Justice League, reports suggest that Man of Steel 2 is being developed at Warner Bros. Discovery, with the British star reprising the role.
Producer Hiram Garcia elaborated on what he has in mind for Black Adam and Superman's potential war. In an interview with CinemaBlend, the Black Adam producer stressed that rather than a one-off fight, the battle between his character and Superman would be "a long-form of storytelling," stating the following:
"It's never been about a one off or just about a fight. No, it's about so much more than that. We really want to craft a long-form of storytelling and show that these two characters exist in the same universe and are going to have to deal with each other often, either on the same or opposite sides. Hopefully they're going to clash at some point, but it's not just about a ‘one fight’ situation. That was never our dream. That does not reward the fans. Fans want to feel a journey between these guys knowing that these guys exist in the same universe."
When Will Black Adam & Superman Fight In The DCEU
With Garcia's hope in having the DCEU build up to Black Adam and Superman's eventual fight, the bigger question is when they will have said showdown. Since Cavill hasn't been spotted in the DCEU since 2017, the franchise has been disconnected from Superman, which has prevented the character from being further developed as a major player. Even though Superman has been featured in a few cameos, it wasn't Cavill donning the suit which has drawn much criticism over the years. Assuming that Man of Steel 2 happens, it would be proper to let Cavill's character get a moment to breathe and re-establish where he is now, especially as it has been several years since audiences last saw him before rushing a war against Black Adam. If Garcia's idea is what they want to stick to, Superman and Black Adam may not even fight until future sequels, whether Black Adam 3, Man of Steel 3 or even Justice League 2.
Given the massive scope behind these DC characters, it's perfectly understandable why Garcia would want the DCEU to take its proper time executing the Black Adam/Superman showdown. Since this would be the first time Superman and Black Adam would ever clash in live-action, it's not a story that should be rushed by any means. In addition to the creative aspects, it will also depend on how Black Adam does at the box office before they can go forward with any plans, which would first have to be approved by Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Films. As Black Adam opens in theaters globally this week, time will tell what will become of those Superman plans.
