The author of who goes by the codename Gossamer, has worn temporary disguises in the past, this is the new character's very first official costume, cementing him as an established DC Comics superhero for years to come.
Superman: Son of Kal-El has received critical acclaim from both fans and comics critics alike for it's action, heart, and sincerity, as well as the momentous reveal that Clark Kent's son Jon, the new Superman, is bisexual. While media will sometimes pay lip service to the LGBTQ+ community by having someone come out and then never addressing their sexuality again, Superman's queerness and relationship with his boyfriend has become an enduring aspect of the character's growth into a full fledged superhero, and it is awesome to see Jay growing into his own heroics as well.
Superman: Son of Kal-El #14 - written by Tom Taylor, who is also the writer on the 5-time Eisner award nominated series Nightwing, and illustrated by Cian Tormey (The Darkhold, Catwoman) - continues to follow Superman and Gossamer as they fight back against the evil Henry Bendix. Bendix is the President of Gamorra, the isolated totalitarian island country that Jay is a refugee from, and has been working with Lex Luthor and other villains to try and take down the heroes while positioning himself and his Gamorran soldiers as the good guys. Jay was first introduced to Jon as the leader of The Truth, and underground newspaper working against Bendix, but they quickly developed a romantic relationship before Nakamura revealed the origin of his intangibility powers, or the ability to move through any object, due to experimentations done by President Bendix. This power is on perfect display in Travis Moore's cover for Superman: Son of Kal-El #14, colored by Tamra Bonvillain, as Jay easily phases through the white paper background, while Jon Kent fearlessly rips the page open with a smile on his face.
When undercover for The Truth, Jay goes by "Gossamer" and has been seen in an all-black spy outfit, and it has also been revealed that Nakamura works with The Revolutionaries, a group of anti-heroic vigilantes, which that looks great with Jay's bright pink hair, and what looks to be a hood similar to his casual orange hoodie he usually wears, Gossamer's first official hero outfit is an ideal look to establish himself as a force for good fighting against the terrible Bendix.
A key part of becoming a confident hero is having a costume that makes one feel powerful and in-control, and Gossamer's newly revealed costume by Travis Moore is honestly the perfect look for Jay Nakamura, and hopefully will stick around for a while as he continues to find his footing as a new hero with Superman.
Superman: Son of Kal El #14 by Tom Taylor and Cian Tormey will debut on August 9th, 2022.
