Spoilers for Legion of Super-Heroes #12 ahead!
Over one thousand years since its destruction at the hands of Rogol Zaar, Krypton has been avenged. In Legion of Super-Heroes #12, Zaar has awakened in the 31st century and attacks New Krypton but gets a little more than he bargained for. Written by Brian Michael Bendis, with art by Ryan Sook, inks by Wade von Grawbadger and colors by Jordie Bellaire, the issue in stores and on digital platforms now.
Zaar was introduced in Action Comics #1000, written by Brian Michael Bendis, and would go on to play a large role in the Superman family of titles. the existence of New Krypton a secret from him, wishing to give him more time to learn about and adapt to the 31st Century. However, Zaar’s attack alerts Jon to New Krypton’s existence, and he takes off, ready to confront Zaar and save Krypton from a second destruction.
Jon tries to rush Zaar away from New Krypton, but he is unsuccessful, and just as Zaar is about to resume his attack, the Legion arrives. They learn that Zaar was freed from the Phantom Zone by their arch-nemesis, the dark sorcerer Mordru, as revenge upon the Legion and the United Planets. Now fighting a two-front battle, Jon and Mon-El team up against Zaar and the Legion take on Mordru; the two Kryptonians manage to overpower Zaar and the Legion, with an assist from a returning Doctor Fate, banish Mordru. With him gone, Zaar has no one left to defend him, and the citizens of New Krypton find him “guility” and banish him once again to the Phantom Zone. At long last, Krypton has been officially avenged.
The best part is that Jon will go back to the 21st century and tell his father what happened, giving his dad the satisfaction in knowing that a grave injustice has been avenged. The citizens of New Krypton will experience this as well.
The story is also a perfect epilogue to Superman family of titles. Zaar, and the revelation he destroyed Krypton, was an integral part of that run, and that story finally gets its satisfying resolution here.
