WARNING: Contains Potential Spoilers for SUPERMAN #18!If there are three things Superman despises, it's Kryptonite, magic, and a red sun. Yet, the Man of Steel has now openly declared his love for one of these very weaknesses—and he’s dead serious. With this surprising revelation, fans are left wondering if Superman will emerge from DC’s Absolute Power crisis event stronger than ever before.
Superman #18 by Joshua Williamson and Jamal Campbell picks up with Superman and Zatanna as they strike a deal with the demon Neron to obtain the Map of Mordu. This powerful artifact grants them access to the Dark Roads—mystical pathways hidden in shadows that connect Earth to the multiverse.
With magic being one of Superman’s greatest weaknesses, it’s no surprise that Clark struggles throughout the mission. However, by the issue's end, Superman’s disdain transforms into outright joy as he declares, “I love magic."
"I Love Magic.": Superman's Famous Hatred For Magic Is No More
Magic Reunites the Man of Steel With the Love of His Life
Unsurprisingly, as Zatanna and Superman traverse the Dark Roads, Clark wastes no time expressing his famous disdain for magic, stating, "This is why I hate magic. The rules always seem to change." He elaborates that his primary issue with magic is that it always seems to come at a cost—a point that’s quickly proven when Zatanna weakens as the Map of Mordu drains her life force. However, an unexpected attack from Konfusion—the Earth-3 version of Superman and Batman’s combined form—forces Clark to confront his aversion to magic head-on.
With the sudden appearance of Konfusion, Zatanna and Superman urgently need to flee the Dark Roads to escape the overpowered villain. Unfortunately, Zatanna is too weak to use the map to guide them home. In response, Clark takes hold of the map alongside her, and she informs him it will take them wherever his heart wishes to go. Moments later, they are transported to Lois, making it clear that Superman's heart yearned to be with his wife. Reunited with the love of his life, the Man of Steel joyfully exclaims, “I love magic”—three words fans undoubtedly never expected to hear from Superman.
Superman Just Redefined His Relationship With Magic (But Will It Last?)
Clark Kent Proves That the Man of Steel Is Capable of Wielding of Magic
What makes this issue particularly compelling is how it redefines Superman’s relationship with magic. Not only does Clark witness the positive side of magic firsthand, but he also actively participates in using it. While he’s far from the skill level of Zatanna or John Constantine, the idea of a magically inclined Superman is exciting. It could soften one of his greatest weaknesses and, ultimately, add a new dimension to his already immense power set. Whether Superman continues to embrace magic after Absolute Power remains to be seen, but the possibilities are intriguing.
