Superman and Krypto are all set to fly onto the big screen together this summer, making it the perfect time to get a more in-depth look at Kal-El's canine companion. Krypto is more than just an adorable ball of fluff - he's a superpowered canine with a mission. By exploring the pup's earliest days on Earth, DC is set to show audiences exactly what makes him special.
DC recently announced Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton #1, by Ryan North and Mike Morton, will hit shelves June 18, just in time to reach audiences before Superman's theatrical release the following month. Throughout the five-issue mini-series, Krypto will navigate the perils and triumphs of life for a lost alien dog searching for his missing best friend.
While Krypto certainly has superpowers, he's ultimately a dog like any other. When he lands on Earth, he doesn't understand what's going on, where he is, or how to find little Kal-El, leaving him to figure things out the way only a canine can.
DC Offers a Closer Look at Krypto's Origin
Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton #1 by writer Ryan North, artist Mike Norton, and colorist Ian Herring
Although Krypto is already recognizable in the DC Universe, Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton offers something different. Rather than drop in while he's already fighting crime alongside his beloved Superman, Ryan North wanted to explore what it would really be like for a dog to end up on a completely unfamiliar planet. Krypto was always driven to get back to Kal-El, but that's easier said than done, especially when he was stuck navigating new powers of his own. Audiences know his journey will ultimately be successful, but exploring his early days offers valuable insight into what sets Krypto apart.
The chance to really define Krypto—to show what a little lost dog would go through if he landed all alone on a strange alien world named Earth—was really enticing.
North wanted to dig into Krypto's adventures without Superman, including what it would be like for a dog who couldn't speak or effectively communicate to grasp an entirely unfamiliar planet. While Superman ended up with the Kent family to raise and guide him, Krypto was on his own to survive and find his friend, which the miniseries will largely explore through art without text bubbles or inner dialogue. It's a whole new world and a whole new life seen through the eyes of the universe's very best boy. Krypto's bond with Superman is compelling, but it had to start somewhere.
Superman Fans Finally Get the Missing Pieces of Krypto's Story
From its stunning covers by Jae Lee and Dustin Nguyen to its compelling look at Clark Kent's most loyal and steadfast companion, Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton offers the perfect insight into DC's most beloved pet. It's certain to add some extra flavor ahead of Superman's July release, along with giving fans a new, unseen perspective. Before Krypto was Superman's right hand in battle, he was just a lost dog on a new world looking for his best friend, and now fans can finally see what it took for him to become the pup they know and love.
Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton #1 will be available June 18 from DC Comics.
