Summary

  • Superman: Legacy cast revealed, set for major release on July 11, 2025 to kick off DCU revival.
  • New chest logo for Superman hints at Kingdom Come inspiration, raising speculation on narrative.
  • Superman's cape will remain, potential pocket feature hinted, but the trunks debate remains unresolved.

Superman: Legacy is slated for release on July 11, 2025, when the DCU will commence in earnest.

Kicking things off with Superman is not surprising, given that the character is synonymous with the DC brand alongside Batman, who will appear in his own solo movie in The Brave and the Bold sometime after Superman: Legacy. With the DCU's Superman being so close to James Cavill's DCEU rendition, the comparisons will be unavoidable when he makes his debut. As for how he will look, when asked on Threads whether Superman's suit will be "more classic, modern, or something totally new and different," Gunn simply responded, "All of the above." This isn't all he has revealed, however.

A post shared by @Culturecrave on Twitter/X unveiled what appears to be the chosen chest logo for the DCU's Superman. The reveal came via Superman: Legacy's Hawkgirl actor, Isabela Merced, who shared an image of her nameplate at a reading for the movie via Instagram. This nameplate, and presumably those of everybody present, included a stylish "S" symbol that looks identical to a certain version of Superman's symbol from the Kingdom Come run of DC Comics. If Superman: Legacy does adapt this particular logo, then it will take the form of a red "S" on a black background.

The potential reasoning behind using this logo is intriguing. The Kingdom Come version of Superman hails from a universe in which the Joker kills Lois Lane, and violent heroes take Superman's place in his subsequent isolation. This is a far cry from the lighter tones that have been teased for Superman: Legacy, which Gunn has already revealed is heavily inspired by All-Star Superman. Whether the choice behind this logo has any bearing on the narrative remains to be seen, but it will be a significant departure from other cinematic outings.

The Kingdom Come version of Superman and his suit appeared as part of the DC Arrowverse crossover event Crisis on Infinite Earths. This version was portrayed by Brandon Routh, who played the role in 2006's Superman Returns.

Superman's Legacy Costume Will Have A Cape

Although the discussion around Superman's costumes can get a little heated, Superman's cape is arguably one of his most important features outside the "S" logo. Thankfully, the cape is staying, which is possibly the least surprising costume reveal so far. As yet, however, Gunn is being more coy about whether the cape will include a symbol or not, in a similar fashion to the Superman costume that appears in All-Star Superman, the comic book that has been the central inspiration for the movie, according to Gunn.

James Gunn Hints At Another Key Cape Detail

While Gunn is keeping the S symbol under wraps, he did unveil that one lesser-known feature of Superman's cape will likely feature in Superman: Legacy. When asked about where Superman's business suit goes when he changes while "on the run," Gunn responded: "Josh Byrne says it's in his cape." The Josh Byrne that he refers to is likely the illustrious comic book writer and artist who worked on the 1986 relaunch of Superman, Man of Steel, who is seemingly on hand to consult with James Gunn on details about the character.

If this is the case, it would mean that Superman will have a handy pocket in his cape for just such occasions. Gunn's lack of concrete answer without first consulting with Josh Byrne, however, suggests that this is not a factor that Superman: Legacy will delve into in great detail. On the other hand, the fact that Gunn took the time to answer this question might hint that the movie may at least include a nod to this particular tidbit.

When Superman's New Costume Will Be Revealed

When asked whether the new Superman suit will be revealed before filming for Superman: Legacy begins in March of this year, Gunn's response was rather blunt, stating that there is a "zero-point-zero" chance of that happening. This means that the suit will most likely be revealed around the Spring of 2024 at the earliers. Henry Cavill's Superman suit, for instance, was unveiled just a few days into the principal photography for Man of Steel, which came via an official shot of Cavill in action.

This goes to show just how important Superman's costume is to fans, as it won't take long for the design to leak should Gunn resolve to keep from revealing an in-depth look at it for too long. While certain elements of his suit, like the "S" symbol and cape, are decidedly important features to certain Superman super-fans, there is another feature that many are clamoring to know details about despite being a largely inconsequential facet of Superman's identity: his trunks.

Will Superman Wear Trunks?

Brandon Routh's Kal-El arrives to defend Earth in Superman Returns

James Gunn revealed "You wouldn't believe the amount of pleading and upset I get based around trunks or no trunks," when asked about this all-important facet of Superman's design, adding that he doesn't feel that his trunks are the most important part of Superman's story. The trunks to which fans are referring are the red pair of trunks that Superman is often seen wearing above his suit. It is also one of Superman's most often ridiculed features, which makes adapting them faithfully into a movie a risky move for a director who wishes to have their character taken seriously.

Henry Cavill's version of Superman famously did not wear the trunks, but the first official photo of him in his suit purposely obscured the area where they would have appeared, further stoking the debate.

Thankfully, this is the kind of thing that James Gunn doesn't tend to stress over and may even lean into based on its comic book accuracy and the more lighthearted nature of Superman: Legacy. He has not, however, confirmed either way whether the famous red trunks will be making an appearance, opting instead to let the debate rage on social media over whether Superman should be sporting the shorts in a live-action rendition until an official reveal divulges one way or another. For now, it looks like the details of Superman's suit are still pretty vague.
