Warning: Spoilers for Superman & Lois season 2, episode 5
Superman & Lois season 2 ended with only one main character not knowing Clark’s secret. The events of the show’s second season radically changed the dynamics of the characters in the series and how they fit into the story. Things are quite different from what they were in season 1 when Clark and Lois had a much smaller inner circle.
The final episodes of Superman & Lois season 2 offered some huge, game-changing developments. The one that set most of them in motion was Bizarro Jonathan’s decision to kidnap Lana Lang. That event resulted in Clark deciding to finally bring Lana into his confidence after years of hiding his Kryptonian heritage. Since the beginning of the series, Clark and Lois have adhered to a strict rule that no one can be told that Clark Kent is Superman. The fight with Ally Allston and Lana’s unfortunate involvement in the situation has forced the Kents to reevaluate their way of living. They were even willing to let Lana decide whether or not her family could know. She was opposed to Sarah being told, but that no longer mattered when she saw Jordan use his powers.
In Superman & Lois season 2, episode 15, titled “Waiting for Superman”, Sarah learned that Clark is Superman off-screen, and Chrissy Beppo received the same shocking news from Lois. Now that both characters know the truth now, only one character remains in the dark. Kyle stands out as the one main character on Superman & Lois who has no idea that there’s anything out of the ordinary about Clark and his family. That’s obviously a big change from the beginning of the season when there were four characters who didn’t know who Clark really was. In other words, almost half of the cast was being kept out of the loop.
Superman & Lois making a huge change was a surprise, and also one that has unexpectedly brought it much closer to how the other Arrowverse shows have worked. In the case of The Flash, for instance, every main character that Barry Allen interacts with is a person that he doesn’t have to hide his powers from. Up until the finale, Superman & Lois has differed from this approach by making Superman’s identity a closely-guarded secret that the Kents are forced to dance around with their friends and loved ones. As for why the show has elected to head in this direction, it’s important to keep in mind that dispensing with the secret identity element of the show will make it easier for each character to get a role in the main story.
It's worth wondering if Superman & Lois season 3 will go a step further by making it so that all characters are aware that Clark Kent and Superman are one and the same. For the time being, such a scenario where one of the characters tells him the truth feels unnecessary. He’s not close enough to the Kents for that to be something that Clark and Lois should consider seriously. However, that could change in season 3 if Jordan’s powers and connection to Superman puts his daughter in danger.
