Recently revealed details about Superman and Lois's Lex Luthor, who is set to make his debut in the third season of the CW series, suggest that he will be the most unhinged version of the iconic character ever. Michael Cudlitz is set to bring this new iteration of Lex Luthor to life in a way that feels fresh and new to the franchise, which has seen many reboots and revivals over the decades. As viewers prepare for season three of Superman and Lois to premiere on March 14th, the show promises to bring with it a remarkably vengeful Lex Luthor.

Superman and Lois now exists outside the Arrowverse, as revealed in season two's shocking finale, allowing the series to introduce a brand-new version of Lex Luthor. Up until season two's reveal, Superman and Lois was always assumed to take place on Earth-Prime, the Multiversal designation of the Arrowverse franchise. As a result, it was always assumed that, if Lex Luthor ever appeared in the series, he would be portrayed by Jon Cryer, who appeared as the character throughout Supergirl's run. While the separation between the Arrowverse and Superman and Lois proved divisive, the introduction of a new Lex Luthor foreshadows exciting stories to come for the now independent series.

Superman & Lois' Lex Luthor Seems Angrier Than Most Versions Of The Villain

Superman and Lois has referenced Lex Luthor on several occasions in its first two seasons and, now that he has finally arrived, he seems angrier than ever before. Along with the announcement that The Walking Dead's Michael Cudlitz would be portraying the iconic supervillain, DC released an official character description to Entertainment Weekly, which reads: "re-emerging hellbent on correcting a personal injustice by enacting revenge on the two people he feels have wronged him — Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) and Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch)." This surprising character description hints at a deeper history between Luthor and the show's stars, which appears to have left him desperate for revenge.

While other series like Smallville depict Lex Luthor's villain origins, Superman and Lois depicts a version of the character who has already grappled with the Man of Steel, having been bested by his superpowered foe on at least one occasion. This puts Luthor in a very interesting place as season three kicks off, feeling slighted and thirsty for vengeance. The official statement regarding Luthor's characterization hints that he will stop at nothing to defeat Superman this time, making him the most intense version of the character to ever be portrayed in live-action, hinting that Superman may be at a loss when he once more comes to blows with his nemesis.

Luthor's Characterization Can Help Him Stand Apart From Other Versions Of The Character

With so many Superman films and series, the character's new description suggests that Cudlitz's version will find a way to stand apart from previous portrayals. The Entertainment Weekly article also goes on to describe his version as "a brutal psychopath who terrorizes anyone he crosses paths with," which is a stark contrast from any version of Lex Luthor ever put to screen. Typically, Luthor is portrayed as a well-put-together businessman, whose machinations are buried so deep that the public would never suspect his wickedness. This Luthor, however, isn't nearly as calm, apparently wearing his lust for vengeance on his sleeve.

After the disappointment that was Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor in the DCEU, combined with Luthor's mixed arc in the Arrowverse and sudden death in Titans, the news of a truly threatening version of the character who is around for the long haul should be exciting for viewers. Not only will Cudlitz differentiate himself from recent iterations of Luthor, but it sounds like he will be a major obstacle for Superman to overcome, an element that has been missing from the character's recent appearances. When Lex Luthor finally does arrive in the third season of Superman and Lois, audiences should expect his debut to be an event of monumental proportions.
