James Gunn has confirmed that Krypto will appear in 2025's Superman’s large roster of DC characters. Now, Krypto’s DCU debut is set in stone.

On Twitter, James Gunn shared a new image of David Corenswet's Superman with Krypto from 2025's Superman.

The director not only confirmed that Krypto will appear in the film, but he also revealed that this version of the character was inspired by Ozu, Gunn's dog, describing how his real-life experience impacted the DCU movie. Gunn adopted Ozu after he had already started writing the story of the Superman movie, and the journey of seeing first-hand how a dog that had never had with humans went from destroying Gunn’s house to fitting in inspired the DCU’s Krypto.

What The Superman & Krypto Image Means

The Image Is Inspired By An Important Comic Book

Gunn has shared his comic book inspirations for next year's Superman movie many times. Now, he decided to make the first look at Krypto in the DCU film a clear homage to one of them. Corenswet's Superman and Krypto sit on the Moon and watch the Earth from space just like the Man of Steel and the Super Dog did in issue 6 of "All-Star Superman." That comic series was all about what makes Superman who he is, as he is dying but continues to perform heroic acts and interact with his loved ones.

David Corenswet debuts as Superman next year, and based on the actor's past roles, Superman movie set videos, and more, I think he could be the best.

Gunn even included the original shot of Superman and Krypto from the comics in his post. This does not mean that 2025's Superman will see Corenswet's Clark Kent die, but the comic book's theme of exploring what makes Superman such a hopeful and beloved hero connects with what Gunn is attempting to do with his reboot of the Man of Steel. The image shows that Superman and Krypto will likely have a close bond in the film, but whether that happens from the start or the characters get to know each other during the film remains to be seen.

Our Take On The Superman & Krypto Image

The DCU Is Setting Up Another Movie

I'm excited that Krypto has been confirmed for Gunn's Superman reboot. The character will play a crucial role in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow if the movie follows the same setup from the acclaimed comic book series. As such, Krypto getting established beforehand is for the best. Through Corenswet's Superman, Milly Alcock's Supergirl could come into with Krypto. Kara Zor-El is reportedly going to appear in Superman, so Krypto being in it makes even more sense, serving to connect the DCU's first and second movies. The image used to reveal Krypto is perfect, setting the heartwarming tone of Superman.
