In a preview for Action Comics #1058's story "New Worlds Part Two" by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Rafa Sandoval, the newly empowered Dorian reveals that he's going to kill Superman's reputation by destroying Metropolis while impersonating him. Clark is powerless, but he realizes Dorian doesn't have the same control over Superman's powers as Clark does. Clark implores Dorian to listen, causing the unprepared Dorian to hear everything Superman can. The sounds grow louder and Dorian pleads for the sounds to go away as his ears begin to bleed, giving Clark just enough time to activate anti-Superman laser canons to take Dorian down.

Superman's hearing, vision, and the like are extremely sensitive, and the only reason they don't completely overwhelm him is due to Clark spending the majority of his life getting them under control. Superman has complete mastery over the sounds that enter his ears, but Dorian's experience reveals what would happen if that control were to slip. Not only would Clark drown in a sea of noise from literally every sound on Earth, it would be so much to process that his ears couldn't physically handle it. While Superman has had a lifetime learning how to filter out the noise, this moment reveals just how torturous sound can be to someone with hearing like Clark's.

Sound Causes Superman Emotional and Physical Pain

Superman needs to filter out most of Earth's sounds because hearing everyone on Earth who needs him would drive him mad. That alone would be a pretty bad experience, but as Dorian discovered, if Clark didn't have such powerful control over his hearing, he'd experience physical torment on top of his emotional one. It's disturbing to see such a negative aspect of one of Superman's most well-known powers, but there's always a downside to something as powerful as Clark's amazing hearing. Hopefully, Superman won't lose control of his hearing anytime soon so he can avoid the most horrifying aspect of his enhanced hearing. Action Comics #1058 is on sale October 24th.
