Warning: SPOILERS for The Immortal Thor #14

Summary

  • Thor's recent power upgrades make him more formidable and able to overpower Superman in a potential rematch.
  • Superman's vulnerability to magic and Thor's increased strength put the God of Thunder at a significant advantage.
  • The Last Son of Krypton may have to face off against the God of Thunder in a future showdown and may not emerge victorious.

Both Superman are considered some of the most powerful heroes in comic book history. As two of the major powerhouses from their respective universes, Kal-El and the Odinson have been pitted against one another by fans – and even by creators – countless times. On one such canonical occasion, Superman even came out on top, but with Thor’s new status quo, a rematch would surely have a very different outcome.

In JLA / Avengers #2 by Kurt Busiek, George Pérez, Tom Smith, and Comicraft, the titular teams face off in a classic misunderstanding before their eventual team-up. As such, Superman and Thor fight tooth and nail in one of superhero comics’ most devastating bouts.

Ultimately, the exhausted Man of Steel triumphs, but not without acknowledging Thor as the “single toughest opponent” that he has ever faced. But in the twenty years hence, the God of Thunder has undergone more than a few upgrades, and his odds against the Last Son of Krypton are better than ever.

Thor and Superman Are in Different Leagues

The God of Thunder Has Outstripped the Man of Steel

These days, Thor is more than just the God of Thunder – now he’s the All-Father of Asgard itself. As king of the Realm Eternal, the Odinson now wields the All-Power, and he’s even now strong enough to kill Celestial-level beings like Galactus at will. But the Asgardian Avenger’s glow-up hasn’t stopped there. In The Immortal Thor #14 by Al Ewing and Jan Bazaldua, the Skyfather goes toe-to-toe with fellow storm-god Zeus, absorbing the Olympian’s power and adding it to his own. And with the power of two Skyfathers flowing through his veins, there’s practically nothing that can stand in Thor’s way, including Superman.

Thor and Superman are their worlds’ strongest heroes, but these days, they’re barely in the same league.

Superman has undergone a few power increases since he and the God of Thunder last met, but nowhere near the boosts that Thor has experienced. Even in JLA / Avengers #4, Thor says that another battle against Superman could go differently after learning his opponent’s full measure, and that was before his power was increased exponentially. Now, there’s no doubt that another bout would see Thor come out on top, especially considering Clark’s natural aversion to magic and the magical enhancements that the Asgardian has undergone.

Superman Has No Real Defense Against Thor

The Skyfather Is Fueled by Clark Kent’s Natural Weakness

Comic book art: the JLA and the Avengers attack each other with Thor and Superman at the center.

Thor and Superman are their worlds’ strongest heroes, but these days, they’re barely in the same league. The Last Son of Krypton is no pushover, and he’s faced gods before and won, but his last victory against the God of Thunder was only achieved by the slimmest of margins. Now that Thor has reached power levels never before seen, a rematch against the Man of Steel would almost certainly go quite differently. And if Superman and Thor ever have to face off against one another again, Clark Kent just may have to pray for mercy from the God of Thunder.

The Immortal Thor #14 is available now from Marvel Comics. JLA / Avengers is available in collected editions from DC Comics.
