As Supernatural comes to an end with its 15th season, fans of the show have plenty of episodes to choose as their favorites. With over 300 episodes to date, choosing the best is a tall order. Some fans prefer the early episodes while others stuck with the Winchesters to the bitter end.
Whether fans like the early days better or the later seasons more, there are great episodes among all that pulled at their heartstrings and made them laugh. Well past the show's end, the fans will carry on. Here are the 10 best episodes of the series, according to IMDb.
Swan Song (2010) - 9.7/10
The original end to the series when Eric Kripke intended the show to finish with season five is an absolute tear-jerker. It starts with the prophet Chuck narrating the Winchester's history, beginning with the creation of the 1967 Chevy Impala. The nostalgic direction and narrative gave the series a feeling of coming full circle that left fans feeling bittersweet. As Sam makes the ultimate sacrifice by taking on Lucifer and jumping into the pit, leaving Dean behind to grieve and cope in a world without his brother, it's impossible not to cry.
Changing Channels (2009) - 9.7/10
This episode of Supernatural contained that perfect blend of comedy and drama fans came to love about the show. Sam and Dean are sent into a topsy-turvy TV world controlled by the Trickster. They're forced to play roles in TV land with real-life consequences, taking on characters from doctors in a hospital drama to contestants in a Japanese game show.
When Castiel finally rescues them, they capture the Trickster and interrogate him. It's revealed that the Trickster is the archangel Gabriel and he wants the apocalypse to commence.
ScoobyNatural (2018) - 9.6/10
In season 13 Sam and Dean are transported into the classic cartoon world of Scooby-Doo, the original Mystery Gang. Like many Supernatural fans, Dean also adored the 70s cartoon of mystery-solving, meddling teenagers. But in this twist, the ghost the mystery gang is hunting is a real monster straight out of the Winchesters' world.
Daphne, Fred, Velma, Shaggy and Scooby are shaken by the revelation that it's real. The ghost turns out to be a victim too though, and Sam and Dean free him from his sinister master.
Baby (2015) - 9.6/10
The iconic '67 Chevy Impala that Dean lovingly refers to as Baby has been a character of its own throughout the series, so naturally, writer Robbie Thompson dedicated a whole episode to her. This episode shows Sam and Dean's road trip to kill monsters entirely from the car's perspective.
Throughout the season 11 episode, Baby witnesses a one-night stand, the brothers' discussing the possibility of settling down and of course, classic rock karaoke. Dean even unwillingly gives his keys over to a valet as that's the only option for parking at their destination.
The French Mistake (2011) - 9.6/10
The series gets meta when it sends Sam and Dean into an alternate universe where they are two actors named Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles playing the roles of Sam and Dean Winchester in a show called Supernatural. Castiel goes along for the ride too, except he's Misha Collins playing an angel named Castiel.
Fans get to see the actors poke fun at themselves, including Padalecki's marriage to Genevieve Cortese, the actress who played Ruby. But the Winchesters' world follows them in the form of vengeful angel Virgil.
Don't Call Me Shurley (2016) - 9.5/10
The Darkness known as Amara unleashes a black fog on a small town that makes the people go mad. Sam and Dean recognize it as a previous viral magic she's unleashed before, but stronger. They collaborate with the town's sheriff and try to distribute the vaccine to the virus, but it doesn't work anymore.
While the Winchesters deal with Amara's chaos, Chuck proposes a plan to take Lucifer out of Castiel's body to stop Amara. He literally wants to make a deal with the devil.
Fan Fiction (2014) - 9.5/10
Following the footsteps of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the creators of Supernatural decided to include their own musical episode to the horror show canon. Their take shows a high school musical production of an adaptation of the titular novels written by Chuck Shurley.
The students' play is plagued by a theater haunting that Sam and Dean must investigate and end. It also forces the Winchester brothers once more to contend with their real lives treated as nothing but fiction. In the end, they realize their story gives the kids hope.
Lazarus Rising (2008) - 9.5/10
The season four premiere saw the miraculous return of Dean from Hell and introduced the audience to Castiel and the angels. Before this episode, the show strictly worked with monsters and demons. But with the inclusion of Cass and his brothers and sisters the series established the existence of Heaven.
Upon Dean's return, he seeks answers and consults Pamela the psychic. Castiel's true form is too much to handle though and burns her eyes out. Meanwhile, Dean has become more reckless in his hunting. He's not the same man.
All Hell Breaks Loose: Part 2 (2007) - 9.5/10
In the concluding chapter to season two with the psychic kids, Dean is reeling after witnessing Sam's murder by the hands of Jake. Dean is desperate to have his baby brother back and takes to the Mississippi crossroad to summon a demon and make a deal.
Meanwhile, Ash finds out that Samuel Colt made the gun as a key to the gate to Hell. The team fails to stop Jake from opening the gate but Dean succeeds in getting Sam back. But his return came at a great cost: Dean's soul.
Moriah (2019) - 9.4/10
The series' 14th season shows Sam and Dean dealing with a Nephilim named Jack Kline that is more powerful than anything they've ever seen. Jack breaks out of a magical box made to contain an archangel and disappears, but not before sending the brothers flying across the room.
As Jack wanders the city he becomes fed up with the lies he hears everywhere and inadvertently uses his powers to make it so that no one can lie. He tries to return to his grandparents but his Nephilim powers overwhelm him.
