Given the news that the Supernatural fans still hope that Misha Collin's Castiel could one day make an appearance in the prequel. Since the angel was a major ally to the Winchesters brothers, fans could see him providing similar assistance to their parents in their monster hunt pursuits. While the idea is interesting, it would also contradict some storylines in Supernatural.

While Castiel’s appearance in The Winchesters might be a plot hole since he never met John and Mary in Supernatural, there are already quite a few of these present in the original show. These range from inconsistencies with Castiel’s powers to his lack of knowledge over things he shouldn’t have been ignorant about, which presents a different context about the angel and the show.

Why Did Castiel Claim Angels Hadn't Been On Earth For Centuries?

Female Castiel looking angry in Supernatural

During the first season of Castiel’s introduction, he mentions how unnatural it is for angels to be on Earth. Castiel also points out that it’s been centuries since they’ve left Heaven, which clashes with flashbacks featuring the character and other angels.

Castiel appeared in the vessel of a female human in an episode set decades in the past, which is hardly that long compared to his claim. Moreover, Uriel, Michael, and Anna were seen in the ‘70s, with none of them acting as if they hadn’t been on Earth for a long time. This makes it unclear why Castiel would later claim that Earth hadn’t been visited by angels.

How Did Heaven Function Without Angels?

Castiel talking to angels in Heaven in Supernatural

One of Castiel’s last visits to Heaven saw him learning that it was about to fall due to the low number of angels that remained. Castiel was visibly terrified at the prospect since it would mean that the billions of souls in Heaven would be released, throwing the universe into chaos.

However, Castiel never did anything about it, and this point never became a problem. In fact, Castiel later returned to Heaven and ended up killing Duma when the latter took over, which should have caused an even bigger problem since it meant another angel had died. Yet, Heaven continued as before, and Castiel stopped worrying about it.

How Did Castiel Use His Powers On A Leviathan In Purgatory?

Castiel with a leviathan behind him in Supernatural

Facing Leviathan was one of Castiel’s biggest fears in Supernatural since the creatures were immune to the powers of an angel. While he continued to be susceptible to them during his first stay in Purgatory, his second trip with Dean somehow had Castiel overpower a Leviathan.

Castiel easily used his telekinesis on a Leviathan attempting to ambush him, not even needing to look at the monster. This completely undermined his original entrapment in Purgatory since Castiel could have easily survived at the time if his powers had worked on Leviathans. It wasn’t explained how he suddenly had the ability to do away with these monsters.

Why Was Castiel's Banishment From The Sigil Inconsistent?

Castiel uses the Angel Banishing Sigil in Supernatural

One of the best Castiel moments in Supernatural was when he turned on the angels to aid Dean – Castiel made the angel banishing sigil to remove the angels holding Dean captive. At that time, Castiel himself wasn’t banished, which wasn’t consistent with later occurrences.

In one instance, Castiel marked his body with the sigil and ended up banishing himself along with the surrounding angels. But this shouldn’t have happened, considering he was banished the first time he’d done it. It appears that the angel banishing sigil functioned accordingly when the plot called for it.

How Did Castiel Regain His Senses In Purgatory?

Castiel talking to Dean and Benny in Supernatural

Castiel lost his senses after he took on Sam’s torture, which was a big plot point during the war against the Leviathans. This wasn’t an issue anymore when he and Castiel were transported to Purgatory, as Castiel had somehow regained his mind by then.

Apart from a brief mention that he was in charge of his mental faculties once more, Castiel never explained how he was suddenly cured. There was never any correlation between being transported to Purgatory and an angel’s mind, so it’s still a mystery as to how Castiel was able to be back to his usual self.

How Did Castiel Restore Dean's Soul To His Body Without Accessing It?

Dean looks at Castiel's handprint in Supernatural

Despite all the unpopular opinions about Castiel on Supernatural, the character’s debut remains among the best Castiel-based episodes in Supernatural, with the first tease of his role coming through the hand print he left on Dean’s shoulders. Castiel claimed that he’d raised Dean’s soul from Hell, but the actual act of placing his soul into his body is confusing.

It was shown that resurrecting or reinserting a soul required an angel to be physically present with the body, but Dean’s corpse had been buried deep in the ground by Sam. Furthermore, there was no indication that Castiel had dug into Dean’s grave or refilled it, which leaves a plot hole over how Dean’s body was resurrected.

Why Was Castiel Stumped At The Angel Killings?

Castiel looks at a dead angel in Supernatural

Castiel had no clue how the angels were being killed before it was revealed that Uriel was the one to do so. This shouldn’t have been the case since it was outright stated that demons had no idea how to kill angels. Since only angels had access to angel blades, the process of elimination made it obvious that one of Castiel’s kind was the guilty party.

And yet, Castiel had Dean torture the demon Alastair to extract information about this matter, with the latter confirming that demons weren’t responsible. Another plot hole comes from the fact that demons later actually did have angel blades in their possession, making it strange why the high-ranking Alastair claimed otherwise to Castiel.

Why Didn't Castiel's Vessel Explode When Lucifer Possessed Him?

Lucifer talking in Castiel's body in Supernatural

Castiel claimed that only special people could contain angels within themselves and that Jimmy was one such person. However, this didn’t mean that the same vessel could house the archangel Lucifer, whose true vessel was only supposed to be Sam.

This plot point didn’t factor into Lucifer’s possession of Castiel while the latter was using Jimmy’s body. Having an angel and an archangel inside of Jimmy should have caused him to explode according to established logic, yet the vessel never showed any signs of weakening.

How Was It Possible For Castiel To Remove Sam From The Cage?

Castiel and Sam read a book in Supernatural

There weren’t as many Castiel and Sam moments in Supernatural as many would have wanted, but the former clearly cared a lot for Sam to enter Lucifer’s cage. This was at a time when Michael was also inside, which should have made it impossible for Castiel to enter unnoticed.

Moreover, it wasn’t stated how Castiel even got in the cage since the entire point of locking Michael and Lucifer inside was that it was impossible to access. Making this a bigger plot hole is the fact that Lucifer and Michael were actively torturing Sam, so the idea that Castiel somehow got hold of Sam’s body is hard to believe.
