One doesn't have to be a hardcore fan of Supernatural to notice the bond between Sam Winchester and the angel Castiel on the show. While it might not be as strong as that of his brother's relationship with the angel, it still has its moments of complete clinginess to cringe-worthy.

Over its 15 year run, Sam has been through some serious, if not apocalyptic events with Castiel, so it isn't surprising that the two are close. After all, there is just something about the end of the world that brings people closer. Let's find out just how unique their relationship is.

Sam's Lack Of Curiosity About Angels

Unlike his brother Dean, Sam has never shied away from believing in a higher power, long before he even met an actual angel. Which kind of makes it strange that Castiel presented himself to Dean before Sam, especially since it would have been Sam that would have been more open to his presence.

As time has ed and their relationship has flourished, Sam never seems to ponder about the expansive knowledge that an angel would have at his disposal. A knowledge that would help the Winchesters against various demons and monsters.

Castiel's Neutral Feelings on Sam's Demon Blood Addiction

Castiel, from the beginning, has shown an affinity for speaking the hard truths and never shying away from kicking the can down the road. So, it is a bit perplexing that Castiel showed neutral feelings about Sam's demon blood addiction. Especially since he has shown in the past to outwardly exhibit strong feelings on positions that are of less importance than the demon blood addiction.

The only explanation that could even be given for his lack of enthusiasm on the subject would be that he just didn't know Sam well enough to show his strong feelings on the matter.

If there is one thing Supernatural fans know and understand about the bromance between Castiel and Dean, is that there just aren't any limits to what Castiel will do for Dean. He will literally go to Hell and back without blinking an eye.

The same can't always be said about his relationship with Sam. This is quite puzzling as unlike Dean, Sam isn't as abrasive when it comes to not just working with on a job but to angel-kind in general. Sam consistently shows an agnostic view towards angels, whereas Dean is a zealot against them.

Their Relationship Improved After The Breaking Of Lucifer's Seals

One would think that bringing about the apocalypse would create a permanent rift between friends. After all, who wouldn't be upset about dooming angel and humankind by releasing Lucifer from his cage.

Ironically though, Castiel and Sam's relationship improved dramatically after Sam accidentally freed Lucifer from his prison in season 4. This is puzzling since before the breaking of the seals, Castiel was more than a bit standoffish towards the younger Winchester brother. This hesitancy was due to Castiel feeling that Sam was too much of a maverick to be trusted.

Castiel Trusts Sam With Time Itself

While Castiel has been shown in the past to have reservations with the younger Winchester brother, believing him to be too emotional and kind-hearted to sometimes make the appropriate decision when it comes to life and death situations.

With that said, Castiel allowed Sam and Dean to go back in time to save their mother from a rogue angel. This is an odd change of heart as up until that point Castiel only worked through Dean. Yet, he somehow felt comfortable enough to allow Sam to change the past, thereby changing the future.

Sam Renews Castiel's Faith In God

It isn't that out of the ordinary for a religious individual to have that crisis moment where they question everything that they ever believed in.

That has happened a number of times on Supernatural when it comes to Sam and Dean Winchester. However, after finding out that God refuses to interfere in mankind's strife, it is Sam who comforts Castiel in his moment of crisis. While Sam cannot restore Castiel's faith in God, he does give him a shoulder to cry on and give alternative explanations of why God feels this way.

Castiel Never Teaches Sam Or Dean To Accept Death

It does have to be said that Heaven in Supernatural isn't exactly the perfect afterlife that many envision on their deathbed or in song. In fact, the real Heaven, not the personal Heaven humans live in, looks more like a place where capitalism vomited up big-business mixed in with over-the-top marketing ads.

With that said one would imagine that Angels would teach Sam and Dean to accept death but no, he does the exact opposite by helping them bring back those they care about which usually leads to dire consequences.

Castiel Is Sam's Enabler

It has already been established that Castiel tends to by the whole acceptance aspect of death when it comes to the Winchester brothers but he also goes a step further by allowing them free-range to cause as much universal chaos imaginable.

Castiel never says enough is enough or this time Sam or Dean has gone too far. No, instead, he allows them to break the fabric of existence on numerous occasions without even batting an eye in disagreement. It is like he lacks the in-depth wider picture that a celestial being should possess.

Castiel Chooses Sam Over God

When we first met Castiel, he was one of the few angels who still showed an undying love for their creator. In fact, one could even say that Castiel resembled that of a religious zealot. Yet, as time has progressed Castiel's loyalty to Sam has become so strong that he has on numerous occasions chosen Sam over God or God's plan for the world.

This seems like a complete change of course from Castiel's original viewpoint compared to where he currently stands. It just feels like it flies in the face of who Castiel is as a heavenly being.

Castiel's iration Toward Sam's Abilities

For a creature that has lived millions of years and even walked and talked with God, it is hard to imagine a scenario where Castiel would feel that a mere human is inspirational. Yet, that is exactly Castiel's feelings towards Sam.

Sam does a quick web search over a monster and Castiel praises him as though he is the most knowledgeable creature in the universe. Even when Sam was using demon blood to acquire powers, Castiel acts like Sam's power and knowledge far sures even his own. Which is the furthest from the truth.
